Gilles Peterson Back in Brazil
Exactly two years after the phenomenal success that was Gilles Peterson in Brazil comes a new instalment of the very best music that Brazil has to offer, as we find Gilles Peterson Back in Brazil.

GPBiB is a double album with Das Velhas focussing on the timeless songs and performers of the 60s & 70s. For anyone who has checked Gilles behind the decks or over the airwaves, Das Velhas will bring smiles of recognition. Rare tracks by the incomparable Jorge Ben, the fabulously funky Trio Mocoto and the great Wilson Simonal sit side by side lesser known gems by Silvio Cesar, Wilson De Neves and Evinha. The accompanying Novas set is all about now, taking in Brazilian DNB, reggae dub, spiritual bossa jazz and the burgeoning new reggaeton sounding Rio funk scene including tracks by Drumagick, Bruno E, Rappin? Hood & Seu Jorge.

Quite simply Gilles Peterson has been one of the world?s most influential DJs for many years. As a broadcaster, DJ, album compiler and record company A+R his way of relating and applying the world of music has touched countless listeners as well as influencing and inspiring an abundance of DJs and respected searchers for musical truth. He has been instrumental too in encouraging new music through his association with the Acid Jazz and Talkin Loud record labels via artists such as Terry Callier, 4 Hero, Roni Size, NuYorican Soul and The Young Disciples.

And then there?s Gilles?s abiding love for the music of Brazil, which goes back to his teens ever since he first broadcast over south London from his back yard shed. Brazilian music has featured heavily in his worldwide DJ sets and on his ground breaking WorldWide show on Radio 1. In the legendary Jazz Room at the Electric Ballroom in the 80s he fed London?s dancers with a staple diet of hard jazz and obscure but much loved, percussion fuelled, Brazilian fusion. Today, he is still diggin? and discovering those lush jazz infected classics that provide the foundation for Brazil?s funk, drum ?n bass and hip hop modernists and for the global nu-skool jazz crew.

Simon Dunmore the head of Defected Records, explains how Ibiza has been offended, then re-invented and how it is all so very grown up now.

Defected Records soul-boy boss Simon Dunmore is a fanatical collector of vinyl, with over 10,000 records organised by label, and with those he most loves and respects, Motown, Philly, Salsoul, Strictly Rhythm, all taking centre- stage.

Simon has always had a vision that his own label, Defected Records would one day be as revered and respected as those other labels, and that the Defected section will have pride of place in the collection of any self-respecting dance music fan. ?At Defected Records we have a disco philosophy, and disco and house music in its most genuine kind of definition just means people having a good time on a dance floor on a Saturday night?.

Simon began DJing in 1982 and has been working as an A&R man since 1989. This 24 year experience, along with an open mind and an ear for a hit go some way to explaining the massive success of Defected, the label he set up in 1999. To date his label has won numerous awards including Best Global Label at the Miami Winter Music Conference and Best Label at the 2005 UK House Music Awards.

His label has miraculously bucked the trend and has achieved great success despite the current suppressed music market in the UK.

He is the head guy of his own independent company who does not have to answer to the restrictions that a major would generally impose, because of this he has been able to exercise his own gut feeling when choosing to sign records and to date he has had some great successes including a UK No.1 with Roger Sanchez?s - Another Chance as well as numerous and varied recent top 10 records.

A man who doesn?t follow the competition, he goes with what he knows: ?Trends are trends, they come and they go, but good music is good music and that?s the bottom line really?. Good music is the key and he has displayed this through his most recent compilation Eivissa (Ibiza) 06, which is a cool, very grown up view of the music that the island is so famous for. This is certainly not a four to the floor main room mix as you would maybe expect from such a young and energetic place, but almost the complete opposite.

It is a soundtrack for an older, much more sophisticated clubber who now in their majority populate the island. This is the new Ibiza. It has changed a great deal in the last few years and now become a haven for the international glitterati. Simon has carefully compiled the perfect soundtrack to reflect the musical atmosphere during the day and night for such clientele. ?Ibiza is more sophisticated than it has been in recent years. The island is very conscious of the San Antonio West End pub crawl, people throwing up image that it had. The island got unfairly tagged with this reputation after the Ibiza uncovered series that was extensively shown on TV, and it was offended by that image it was given, so as a result a lot of the bars and the clubs and restaurants raised their prices, they didn?t want that sort of clientele to go to the island. So the island as a whole has got more and more exclusive, primarily because it?s an expensive place to go to. So I think that only people that are a little bit serious and possibly a little bit older and a little more affluent can afford to frequent the island. Not to say that young clubbers can?t or shouldn?t go, it just means that it?s become a little more sophisticated I feel?.

Simon is no stranger to the island and can comment with authority as he has visited the island almost religiously over the past 20 years. ?I actually went for the first time in 85 or 86?, He says ?I remember it kind of got a bit rave like between 91 and 95 and it wasn?t really what I was about. It?s almost like its re-discovered itself a few years later, and so I started to go back, and also as a record label and DJ it?s important to go there. You get a real good snap-shot of what people are up to, what records are being played and future sounds?

The island is famous for its wealth of nightlife, and the glamour of its discotheques. Simon embraced this culture and aspired to host a night in arguably the most glamorous club in the world, Pacha Ibiza, comparable easily to the excitement of Studio 54 where he identified instantly with the clientele.

?Generally the output of Defected is aimed at an older sophisticated more demographic, and I think that?s been true of house music and disco throughout the ages. If you look at classic clubs like studio 54, if you look at the pictures, they weren?t kids in those clubs; they are models, artists, and people at the top of their tree, and a little bit older?.

Simons Evissa compilation aimed to do just that, provide a soundtrack that reflected the new values of the island. ?As you get older your tastes mellow, and you want a different sort of quality to your clubbing, and I feel that Defected reflects that, and certainly our nights at reflects that. Pacha to me is the equivalent of studio 54 because you will see the paparazzi there trying to hook up with Elle McPherson, a grand prix driver, or some pretty wealthy people that frequent the place. So musically the album reflects that?. The cover artwork, a specially commissioned illustration, has taken inspiration from the island featuring a mythical Ibizan goddess Tannit which has given the album a beautiful and distinctive look, worthy of the island it represents.
