Unique 3 has sign to Chew The Fat
November 16, 2006

That?s right, you heard it here first here kids! Legendary electronic pioneer Unique 3 has just signed to Chew The Fat! With a deal that not only means you will expect to see this untouchable DJ playing out and about a hell of a lot more but also that one of the biggest tracks in the history of UK electronica ?The Theme? will see a full UK re-release early next year on Fat! Records featuring a whole host of new mixes!
Unique 3 has been cited by such pioneers of electronic music such as The chemical Brothers, Coldcut, Goldie and LFO as an inspiration. His early ?bleep house? created a starting point for house music, as we know it today. Unique 3?s groundbreaking early UK hip-hop bridged the gap from US hip-hop to a vibrant new sound that has changed music forever.
Being able to inspired The Chemical Brothers is one thing, but to be able to stand up and say ?I inspired the UK?s leading electronica label Warp Records back in the day?, well that?s virtually unheard of! With it?s unique sound ?The Theme? was picked up by any self respecting DJ worth his salt from house, techno, hip-hop and soul proving it was an instant classic. Label boss Paul Arnold says;
?There?s no real way to describe the effect it had, this track is the soundtrack to many people?s lives, Influencing people from everyone in today?s scenes like Paul Woolford, Erol Alkan, Autechre and beyond and it remains a classic to this day. Some purists would think this is unremixable but ?why not? When Unique 3 came to me and were interested in reissuing this classic with new mixes, I was honoured and I just could not turn it down?
With Paul keeping full news of who?s actually remixing the package close to his chest, expect to see extremely limited white labels floating around specialist record stores over the Christmas period!
To keep in ?the theme? Fat! have even tracked down the graffiti artist Jason Mcfee, the man responsible for the artwork on the original release and have commissioned him to design the 2007 sleeve, meaning this will be one highly prized package!
?THE THEME? REMIX COMPETITION
The catalyst responsible for kick starting all of this was the fact that Edzy, the man behind Unique 3 had noticed various bootlegs of ?The Theme? popping up all over the place, inspired by this he set up a remix competition on Warp Records digital download site ?Bleep.com?. With the sample pack downloaded over 3000 times and with over 500 entrants from as far a field as Japan, Italy, Hawaii, USA and Stow On The Wold, he new h big things were on the horizon.
The competition has been responsible for rumours surrounding a re-release of the single and as such Edzy has been inundated with requests from heavy hitting producers to remix the track. As interest in remixing the track grew, record labels then began to show interest in re releasing the project. Due the history of the single most wanted to attack the re-release from the classic electronica point of view, not taking into account Unique 3?s status as one of the most exiting DJs on the breaks scene, that was until a meeting with Paul Arnold took place. In Edzy?s words:
?I knew that Chew The Fat! was one of the more serious breaks nights in the country and I knew Mr Arnold?s previous work in the drum n bass field with Certificate 18 Records ? most importantly, I enjoyed having a beer with him, so when he offered me a recording deal and I saw the company?s slogan ?Music with love handles? … how on earth could I say no?!?
REMIX COMPETITION WINNERS ANNOUNCED!
With the competition closed, Edzy has personally trawled through the 500+ entrants and (in his words) ?with the help of a bottle of neat vodka and a couple of bleep-shocked friends? this figure has been whittled down to 75 entrants covering all styles from abstract electronica through breaks and drum n bass, with the eventual winners to be posted on www.thefatclub.com
