Tranquil - Jon Sa Trinxa
May 19, 2007
ou’re in Ibiza it’s the height of summer, you are surrounded by your favourite people and pleasing your five senses is what your life is about for the next week or so. You are lying back basking in the sun light, eyes half closed with your vision of the world slightly hazy, everything has a golden glow and you’re so relaxed the sounds around you are pleasantly distant.
You’re probably on Salinas beach and it’s quite possible you are listening to music supplied by Jon Sa Trinxa
Type his name into google and you get ‘Ibiza’s favourite adopted son’ – it’s not difficult to see why. Artistic to the core and seemingly soaked in the Balearic ethos Jon is as much a part of Ibiza as Salinas beach and the sand it holds. Celebrated for playing a blend of mellow music that doesn’t require definition he marks this summer season with the third instalment of the acclaimed ‘Tranquil’ series by special invitation from Azuli and Space.
This mix is a contemplative and charming blend of old and new, spanning many genres but all very much with R&R in mind. Gems include offerings from California based DJ Day who has sunshine running through his music and the aptly named Jazzbox who combine traditional sounds from days gone with by with a sprinkling of electronica.
While DJ Disse’s subtly-clever cover of Lou Reed’s ‘Walking on the Wild side’ is one of four covers that features on the album. Jon says “to me covers can either be diabolical or magic – sometimes when a cover is done really well it adds a dimension to the song that wasn’t there before.” Other highlights include Blondie’s ‘Rapture’ re-worked by Terry Hall into a mid-tempo acid stroke of genius.
Anyone that is familiar with Jon will know his history and know it could have turned out so differently. 13 years ago he left the UK amidst unhappy circumstances - a series of set backs and misfortune meant Jon arrived in Ibiza broke, disillusioned, separated from his records, his sound system and his passport. To top it all off he had just been hit by a car.
After this particularly nasty series of events someone decided to give him a break and Jon was offered a lift by a stranger, who happened to be the owner of Sa Trincha bar at Salinas. He took Jon to the bar, sensing perhaps a drink in a nice setting would do him some good. By enormous coincidence Jon’s records turned up at the bar around the same time, he slept on the beach that night and when the bar’s usual DJ failed to show Jon was asked to dust off his records and fill in. The rest, as they say, is history.
So there you have it, a very personal collection of music from someone who has a great story to tell. Enjoy.
