The Sonic Destroyer returns to The End

August 16, 2007

In these democratic times, when music is available to download at the touch of a button and every other man and his dog has a pair of Pioneer CDJ 1000’s, the days of the superstar DJ are long gone. There are a few names in the business, however, that can still inspire in even the most cynical and jaded clubber, a slight feeling of awe and a twinge of butterflies in the stomach. It’s fair to say that Jeff Mills is one of these. Heck – the man has even been immortalised in cockney rhyming slang for gawd’s sake!

From his role in setting up the near-mythical Underground Resistance with ‘Mad’ Mike Banks and Robert ‘Nosie’ Hood, to his recording contract with the seminal Tresor label, his residency at New York’s Limelight club, and more recently fusing techno and classical by recreating some of his most famous tracks with the Montpellier Philharmonic Orchestra, he has consistently broken boundaries and set the standards for techno.

Jeff Mills plays techno in its purest form - raw, powerful and completely overwhelming – it gets you right at your core. He infuses stripped down sounds with such energy and emotion – the thundering basslines roar down upon you one minute, only to be pulled back when you least expect it, before he unleashes the music on you again with twice as much force as before. If you only ever see one DJ before you die, Jeff Mills would be a good bet.

Joining Mills in the main room is innovative Brazilian DJ and producer Anderson Noise. Noise began his career throwing parties in his hometown of Belo Horizonte, roping his whole family in – including Mama Noise as hostess and Little Brother Noise as warm up DJ! These days he is an internationally admired figure on the underground scene, both through his own DJ sets and productions, his record label Noise Music, and several mix compilations.

Up in AKA, Luke Solomon’s Little Creatures residency – with guest Chris Duckenfield - goes from strength to strength. A delicious soundtrack of underground disco, slowed down techno, future classics and hidden gems waiting to be rediscovered. The perfect respite from the madness of the main room.

This is the first time Jeff Mills has played at The End for almost two years, and promises to be a night to remember…
