The Club World Awards Are Back for 2008

October 25, 2007

The Club World Awards, the only awards program to honor the total nightclub, kicks off the 2008 season today, with a new online submission system and additional categories. Potential nominees in all 25 categories are invited to log onto www.clubworldawards.com and complete the provided forms to guarantee consideration for the 2008 nominee pool. Nominees will be announced and featured in the January issue of Club Systems International. Nominations close on Thursday, November 1, 2007.

“We took a cue from other awards programs, from the Clios to the Grammys, and started to build a comprehensive online submission system,” says Kerri Mason, editor of Club Systems International and director of the Club World Awards. “The goal is transparency, and increased ease and independence for all potential nominees.”

The Club World Awards are also adding six categories to the preexisting 19, for a total of 25. They are: “Best Bottle Service,” “Best Renovation,” “Best One-Off,” “Best DJ Set,” “Best Club Banger,” and “Best Club Anthem.” Details on each are below. Plus, two old categories – “Best Party” and “Best Resident DJ” – are being revised. “Since our inception, we’ve believed in honoring parties and DJs that were at the same club, week after week,” says Mason. “But times have changed, and that’s no longer a lucrative format for most clubs.” Due to popular demand, nominations in these categories will now be accepted for weekly, biweekly, and monthly parties.

The 2008 ceremony is again set for Miami during late March’s Winter Music Conference, date and venue TBA. Previous ceremonies were held at Opium Garden (Miami), Nocturnal (Miami) and Tabu Ultra-Lounge (Las Vegas), and included presenters like Kelly Osbourne, Danny Tenaglia, Tila Tequila, Ferry Corsten, and Dubfire (Deep Dish).

Winners in all categories report great effects from taking a CWA title. “Winning a Club World Award, especially the people’s choice NightStalker Award, has both positively effected the overall perception of Sullivan Room, as well as reinforced our position as New York’s premier underground music venue,” says Sullivan Room co-owner Sergei Skliarenko, who took home the NightStalker Award in 2007 and 2005. “The real benefits can be seen most directly in the increased ability to attract top international talent. Of course, the bragging rights are pretty cool too!” Other past winners include Pacha New York, Space Miami, Cielo, Crobar, Francois K, and Danny Tenaglia.

Also known as the Disco Globes for their mirror ball trophies, The Club World Awards launched in 2003 and quickly became the vanity prize of choice for North American nightlife professionals. Nominees are selected by the Club Systems International editorial staff, and winners are chosen by a panel of 12 expert judges from all fields in the industry, except in the “People’s Choice” categories (NightStalker Award, Best DJ Set, Best Club Banger, Best Club Anthem), which are decided via online voting.

SIX NEW CATEGORIES*

Best Bottle Service*
Love it or hate it, bottle service has become a critical part of most clubs’ offerings. “Everyone always says they do it better,” says Mason. “Now we want to make them prove it.”

Best Renovation*
“This one was a no-brainer,” says Mason. “Owners who reinvest should be rewarded.” The award will also go to any designers and installers who were involved with the project.

Best One-Off [within a club venue]*
“There was no space in our previous categories to honor that big gig: The major DJ booking or special holiday party that really pulled out all the stops,” says Mason. The only stipulation: The event must have taken place within a nightclub venue.

Best DJ Set*
“General ‘Best DJ’ honors are so broad-scope,” says Mason. “We wanted to boil it down to a single night’s work.” Winners will be selected by the fans, via online voting.

Best Club Banger [instrumental]* and Best Club Anthem [vocal]*
“We always wanted to honor music, but didn’t want to fall into the genre trap: Opening countless categories for every possible style,” says Mason. “So we kept it simple. Club music is club music.” These categories will also be decided via online voting.
