On Saturday 10th May the Sven Vath show rolls into town on the London leg of his ‘Sound of the 8th Season’ world tour, celebrating a glorious season of nonsense on the White Isle last year and looking forward to more this summer.
Sven is one of those DJs whose presence creates a huge amount of anticipation, and by the time he takes to the decks the crowd are always ready to explode. Minimal is not a word that you would associate with the Cocoon boss – his techno runs at full power with all guns blazing. Dark melodies slice through thundering basslines, as you get sucked into the all encompassing sound of Cocoon.
The ‘Sound of the 8th Season’ is a double mix CD representing Cocoon in Ibiza last summer, including tracks from Junior Boys Own, Martin Buttrich, Joris Voorn, Jamie Jones and Pepe Bradock. ‘Freakshow’ was the rather apt theme of Cocoon last year – and when Sven takes to the decks he is as much twisted ringmaster as he is DJ. Commanding the dancefloor from the blue DJ booth in the middle of The End’s main room, he leaps around, flexing his muscles and occasionally even discarding items of clothing, all whilst crafting an impeccable set of roaring techno.
Getting the crowd warmed up early on will be Cocoon’s Chris Tietjen. It’ll be well worth getting down early to check him out, as Sven has a habit of spotting hot new talent. Last year, a then little known Raresh played an excellent warm-up set, and a few months later went on to headline The End’s main room along with his DJ partners Pedro and Rhadoo as the RPR Soundsystem.
Up in AKA, Nocturnal are back, with The Shapeshifters being joined by Liquid People and Simon Hawes. Their last party back in February was a triumphant return for the Nocturnal boys after an absence from AKA of 12 months. For every charging bassline dropped downstairs, expect a funky-as-you-like-it hands in the air response from the boys upstairs. The perfect respite from the intensity of the main room!
