Steve Lawler celebrates 6 years of his Viva Harlem Nights residency at The End
January 16, 2008
Steve Lawler’s Viva Harlem Nights residency celebrates six glorious years at The End this month. A proper underground house party with a loyal and enthusiastic crowd who know what they want and know who can deliver it for them - a night for clubbers who want to find their space on the dancefloor at 10pm, and still be there at 6am when the lights go up.
One thing about Steve Lawler – he’s a DJ who always manages to evolve whilst never jumping on the bandwagon; capable of absorbing new sounds whilst still staying true to his roots. Fans who come to see him – whether new or old – never leave disappointed. Clubbers who remember him from when he first started making a name for himself in the nineties are still drawn in by his driving, energetic sound. Those who’ve never seen him before are often blown away at how he approaches his sets; with the energy of a DJ who has just hit the big time, but the technical mastery of someone who has been honing his craft for over two decades.
Although he initially rose to prominence when progressive and tribal house music was at the height of its popularity, Steve Lawler is not a DJ to be readily categorised. His productions range from deep, driving, melodic tech, to funk-fuelled house, to crunchy techno – and his DJ sets reflect this diversity. Viva Harlem Nights is where Steve has free reign to experiment with his sound – with five whole hours in control of The End’s main room, this is his home turf, where he drops new tracks and remixes before he plays them anywhere else.
Steve comments: “A lot of my musical direction and inspiration comes from this night, from this crowd. I feel so comfortable from the second I walk into that room, there’s a lot of regular faces and that’s why it’s such an intimate party, that’s why it’s such a great vibe.”
For the 6th birthday on Friday 26th January, Oliver Macgregor will be warming up for Steve in the main room, plus Steve will be joined by special surprise guest, to be revealed on the night. The lounge will be hosted by hot new label Hypercolour. Describing their sound as ‘future house and techno’, they’ve released tracks from up and coming producers such as Glimpse and Sebastien Bouchet, with remixes from artists such as Jamie Jones and Justin Maxwell. For the 6th birthday, residents Alex Jones and Cedric Maison will be joined by guest Glimpse.
So there you have it – put simply, some of the finest house and techno around spun by a DJ at the top of his game, with an atmosphere second to none. Long live Viva Harlem Nights!
