Space Cowboy Live
July 13, 2006
Space Cowboy was formed by Parisian born Nicolas Dresti. His version of Prince?s ?I Would Die 4 U?, catapulted him to worldwide attention and brought him champions from Alain Braxe to Fatboy Slim. His debut album was released the same year, where in Japan it became the 3rd biggest selling electronica album of 2004, being particularly well received in art and fashion circles.
?Digital Rock?, is a fantastic follow-up and shows him continuing to push musical boundaries. Broadly a mix of indie and electro, it?s finding favour with the likes of Eddy Temple-Morris (XFM) and Digitalism. The forthcoming single, ?I Know What Girls Like?, is complemented with remixes by RogeSeventyTwo, The Young Punx, and Santos.
This album is peppered with originality, displaying a burgeoning song-writing talent. Dresti?s psychedelic surf-rock is cut with echoes of Brian Wilson?s twisted choral genius (?I Know What Girls Like?). His vocal and guitar hooks are delivered with the glam-rock aplomb of Marc Bolan and Suzi Quatro (?We Like To Party?, ?Raise The Roof?), and the eccentric panache of The Cars early material (?Talking In Your Sleep?), while ?MTV? is as close to perfect ?pop? as it gets.
?Waiting For You (Part 1)? is a prime example of Dresti?s spiky, dischordant guitar riffs, while Part 2 sees him turn it into 3 minutes of chiming, digital pop. Elsewhere, you?ll find Beach Boy harmonics riding extreme lo-fi rave (?Running Away?), electro bleeps (?Music Is My Life?) and the kind of French disco blasted out of dirty London archways (?Sometimes?).
Space Cowboy?s influences range from The Killers to Paul Epworth?s productions, but his music avoids retro plagiarism for sheer futurist delight, delivering his songs in a style that could only come from the Noughties.
