Soulcast and Indian Princess - Someone Like Me
May 19, 2007
“Someone Like Me” is the result of a mixture between the sexy vocals of Indian Princess and the fabulous, funky house music of the two Italian Producers Soulcast. Before Release by HIT! Records Universal, date 21st of May, “Someone Like Me” is already playing in the highest rotation on KISS FM London, and on MTV. It’s Indian Princesses first successful Dance record… From the 25th of May, Indian princess can be seen in Clubs throughout the U.K. with her Live P.A. Tour of “Someone Like Me”, which will be the first.. but certainly not the last that we’ll hear from her….
The from origin half Indian half Dutch Indian Princess was born on the 12th of September 1984 as Déwika Nathassia Saalbach in Gouda,The Netherlands. She has been singing and dancing since the very first moment she could move her lips and hips, and has entertained many family birthday parties at the age of 3. Her father recognized the early talent, and brought her an old microphone out of a touring car so she could start practising for what later would be her passion and her life.
With a from origin Indian mother but born in the South American country Surinam, Déwika grew up absorbing many different music styles from traditional Indian music and Bollywood to the sensual Latin music as Salsa, Merengue and the Surinam Kaseko. At the same time she sang her own invented English & Spanish lyric versions to the music of Madonna, Gloria Estefan, UB40 and Bob Marley. As a product of two (and more) cultures, Déwika worships the colorful and spiritual aspects of the Indian culture, and the down to earth, pragmatic and liberal Dutch culture which stems for “Just be normal, that’s mental enough”, which by the way, isn’t a sentence that fits into her live prospectives. The result of her own mixture of the two cultures can be found in her own designed out-fits, performances, her character and her way of living. An exotic cocktail of different (world)music styles and languages, that is the stamp she puts on her own composed music. She has big affinity with singing in different languages; besides English, Déwika sings in Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi, and in her mother tongue Dutch.
Just as many musicians, Déwika started to practice the first roots of her musicality by playing the recorder, 5 years before she replaced it for a Alto Saxophone at the age of 11. Besides performing with her Saxophone, she started to perform singing at the age of 16 encouraged by her music teacher & film score writer J. van der Voet; at this time she also wrote her first songs composed on the guitar which she taught herself to play.
While still studying for a degree in International Music Management in The Netherlands at Inholland University and London Metropolitan, she has been working in London together with Grammy Winner Writer/Producer Bruce Elliott-Smith and Pete Hammond at Archangel Music Group for more than a year as part of an internship/work-placement. Besides working, she started to sing her first Dance Records under the Alias of “Indian Princess”… The song “Someone Like Me” was the first track on which she sang.
When Déwika is in Holland she is vocalist in the funky/soul band “Sonic Soul” under the leading of (her cousin) band manager singer/percussionist Jerry Hoeby. Band members come from Nationaly and Internationaly well known Dutch artists: Candy & Hans Dulfer, Do (from the remix “Heaven” by DJ Sammy), Trijntje & Tjeerd Oosterhuis and live show producers from Dj Tiësto. With this band she has experienced her first Tour through Switserland in 2006.
