Shuffle

October 25, 2007

ter an exciting summer following the underground success of ‘Whatsthatyougot?’ Shuffle return with a new single of pure musical delight, ‘Listen Love’. To coincide with this release the band has also announced a number of gigs and some juicy remixes by none other than Charlotte Hatherley. ‘Listen Love’ is the A side to the bleepy and brilliant ‘Toast’ and both are released through Bloodlust Records in October.

Shuffle are a band that can’t be pigeonholed as their run of appearances at some of this summer’s most sort after festivals including Glastonbury, Secret Garden and Electric Picnic, have demonstrated and has introduced them to new audiences. They have managed to create a sound that is for music lovers, fusing the energy of punk, the freedom of jazz, the inventiveness of Hip Hop and the Spirit of Rock n Roll. As a result, they have fashioned a buzz that has gained them a loyal fan base and critical acclaim, from the likes of Xfm’s John Kennedy and Claire Sturgess. Their effortless musical eccentricity has also seen them pick up the gong for best act in the Leftfield category at the Diesel-U-Music awards in 2005.

‘Listen Love’ is a modern day pop song that conjures up images of 1950s high school balls brought right up to date with a funky slice of scratching. It’s a tale of contemporary relationships and the all too familiar issues that arise from them…or so you’d think…being Shuffle it’s never going to be a conventional tale. Listen Love showcases shuffle’s fun side with their ability to mould bouncy beats that run throughout the song, jagged guitars and vivacious samples that are complemented by Monica’s smooth harmonies. Whilst ‘Listen Love’ is the heart felt pop juggernaut, ‘Toast’ is noisier than noise itself opening with a fusion of electronic bleeps and percussion that slowly builds up until the guitars kick in towards the end of the track. It’s a riot in song terms. Clashing sounds compete for the listener’s attention over Seamus’ amusing lyrics that draw the track to a humbling conclusion.

Shuffle create a unique sound that blends together samples that draw from strange 30’s noises and electronic beeps with the raw edginess of punk. A rebellious attitude of old rock n roll is mixed with strong rhythms of hip hop, 60s trash and garage and 30s jazz. Mix this with the melodic vocals of Seamus Hayes and Monica Yam and you get a sound that is totally indescribable. A highly visual band on any stage their live performances are electrifying making Shuffle shows something to behold. Their forthcoming performances will see the band team up with the uber cool Blow Up, Barfly and Scary Gotcha.
