Secret Sundaze Vol. 1 – mixed by Giles Smith and James Priestley
1/09/2007Since 2001, secretsundaze has been at the forefront of the UK underground scene and set the standard for Sunday daytime parties. They were one of the first UK promoters to book international acts including Steve Bug, Luciano, Guido Schneider, Matthias Tanzmann and Dan Ghenacia, as well as hosting more established artists including Carl Craig and Ricardo Villalobos – booking them into (sometimes illegal) venues, not usually the norm for such events.
Six years since its inception and after hosting summer parties in London, one-off specials in Ibiza, parties at Sonar (Barcelona) and Snowbombing (Austria), hosting tents at various UK festivals, winning ‘Best Club’ awards in Mixmag and Time Out (UK) – as well as being immortalized in a song (Ali Love’s ‘Secret Sunday Lover’ on Columbia records) – secretsundaze releases its first compilation: ’secretsundaze Volume 1′ mixed by its residents and promoters Giles Smith and James Priestley.
‘Secretsundaze Volume 1′ represents the sound of the party since the start, with both mixes encompassing a musical selection that will not only take you back but also bring you forward: from dub to disco (Italo style), ‘proper’ house classics, straight-up rave, to the best in current underground house music.. Take a trip.
Alongside secretsundaze, Giles Smith also promotes and DJs for All Over My Face and has played at some of the world’s best clubs – with regular slots in Room 1 at Fabric (UK), Panorama Bar, Robert Johnson, Watergate (De), Rex (Fr) and Space Ibiza. As a producer, he works under the moniker Two Armadillos alongside King Roc, releasing on Steve Bug’s Dessous imprint, Four Twenty recordings and his and Priestley’s own secretsundaze music. He also has his own radio show, ‘The New Funk Theory’, on Samurai.fm www.samurai.fm and is the techno/minimal reviewer for DJ mag in the UK.
James Priestley has been running successful UK club nights since the 90s. Alongside Secretsundaze he also promotes and DJs for London parties including Go!Zilla and All Over My Face, as well as DJing regularly around the world – including Brazil, JapanandRussia. On the production front he produces alongside Dan Berkson and has remixed artists including Spektrum, Italian X-Rays and Kissogramfor Fine, Nonstop and his secretsundaze music imprint. His first full production release ‘Chariots’ – produced alongside Berkson and inspired by the energy and emotion of the closing moments of many secretsundaze parties – is set for release in September on Simple Records.
Not only have the duo’s parties become one of the most successful London nights, they’ve also played a major role in TDK Cross Central Festival, Lovebox, Wildchild and the Bloom Festival; consistently programming and hosting packed arenas at them all. They’ve also made a big impact in Europe with highly memorable daytime / outdoor parties in Ibiza (Blue Marlin, Gala Night) at Sonar (Parc Del Forum, Shoko, Xiringuito Escriba) and Snowbombing (Mayhrofen, Austria).
Released in October, this double CD represents everything that’s addictive and ingenious about the secretsundaze phenomenon. Both partners of the ss enterprise provide their own mix and also incorporate an exclusive production each. Giles offers the Detroit inspired ‘Warriors’ whilst James serves up his collaboration with Dan Berkson, ‘Chariots’ as well as a dub of their remix for Kissogram’s ‘My Friend is a Seahorse’.
‘Warriors’ and the ‘My Friend is a Seahorse Dub’ will also be released separately on a limited vinyl sampler through the secretsundaze label – released October 8th
