Marvin The Martian – Debut EP “Hoods And Badges
19/05/2006Zap Zap, The Martian has finally landed! Emerging from the Why Lout? crew of Brixton and currently cited by the NME magazine as one of the leading lights of the Grindie scene, Marvin is set to release his first solo EP ‘Hoods & Badges’ on 5th June via Universal Digital.
The EP opens with ‘I Don’t Go (Alone)’ and is a brilliant demonstration, not only of Marvin’s skills but of the very ethos of the scene. UK
Hiphop / Grime MCs are connecting with emerging indie bands, playing at the same gigs, sampling and re-making their tracks. For the old gits around this is nothing new – The Clash working with Lee Scratch Perry, Mickey Dread toasting on “Bankrobber” … For everyone else it’s the freshest breath of air in current alternative music.
‘I Don’t Go (Alone)’ samples ‘Walk With Me’ by the brilliant new band Good Books who have just signed to Columbia. The band has actually played it live with Marvin at a recent gig. Also on the EP is ‘Around The Way’, a slice of motorbike grime that takes you on a trip around Marvin’s home town of Brixton. The EP finishes with ‘Stay Off The Kane’. Already a cult classic and as the NME states – the first ever Grindie Track, SOTK samples ‘Emily Kane’ the punk tale of lost love by Art Brut and twists it into something altogether different and brilliant that was receiving John Kennedy plays on XFM almost a year ago.
And there are more collaborations in the pipeline that will follow on from the Hoods & Badges EP, work is already underway with Akira The Don & !Forward: Russia and the Maccabees to name a few.
There’s also an impending date on XFM’s John Kennedy show and a legion of new My Space recruits through his fast developing fan base. Marvin The Martian – one to watch.
