Lovebox presents Groove Armada
February 07, 2007
They need little introduction, but we’ll give them one anyway. Tom Findlay and Andy Cato, who you just might know by the name Groove Armada, make a welcome return to The End for a rare DJ set on Saturday 17th February.
Now one of dance music’s most successful duos, whether performing live, behind the decks, or staging 10,000 strong dance festivals, it seems many moons ago that Andy Cato was playing the trombone in a Yorkshire brass band and Tom Findlay was collecting rare funk records in his native Cambridge. The pair hooked up in London, started promoting a club night under the wonderfully irreverent name “Captain Sensual At the Helm Of The Groove Armada”, and soon decided to start recording under a slightly less tongue-twisting version of that name.
What followed were four artist albums, each very different in character from the last, and each spawning several dancefloor and chart hits across the globe, from the soothing tranquility of ‘At the River’ to the ragga influenced booty shakin ‘Superstylin’. Not content with that, the pair went onto set up the Lovebox festival in 2003, which this year will be back in London’s Victoria Park on the weekend of the 21st July.
Alongside DJing commitments and festival planning, the duo have been back in the studio recently, with their latest track, ‘Get Down’ picked out as ‘Essential New Tune’ on Pete Tong’s Essential Selection, and an eagerly anticipated new album due out late April.
For those who just can’t wait till July to get Loveboxed up, on Saturday 17th February, Groove Armada will be joined in The End’s main room by breakbeat bad boys Evil 9, plus the faithful Lovebox Allstars.
The lounge plays host to the queen of late night Radio 1, Annie Nightingale. What this lady doesn’t know about music you could write on the back of a postage stamp with a felt tip pen, so hearing her in action at The End is not to be missed. She’ll be joined by DIY, Adrian Fillary and Jools Butterfield.
Upstairs, iconic London collective Faith will be hosting AKA. Started in 1999 by Terry Farley and Dave Jarvis, this night epitomises the very best in house music. Joining Terry and Dave behind the decks will be Jimmy P, and Radio 1’s Rachel Barton.
