Guanabara welcomes back Sao Paulo four-piece Zémaria
October 25, 2007
On Thursday November 15th, Guanabara welcomes back Sao Paulo four-piece Zémaria. Their last gig at Guanabara was a riot of post-punk, with nasty electronics, a pinch of house and breaks, plus a cheeky re-working of Daft Punk’s ‘Da Funk’, which has to be heard to be believed. The gig precedes the full UK release of their fresh, innovative album ‘11 Tracks’.
Originally from Vitoria in eastern Brazil, Zémaria are Sanny Lys (vocals) Marcel Dadalto (synths, sequencer, guitar and voice), Michel Sponfeldner (bass guitar) and Nego Leo (drums, synths and effects).
On moving to Sao Paulo, Zémaria started a residency at ‘Speedz’, the notorious night at city-hotspot Funhouse, performing live with various guests. In ‘02 they released their debut album ‘Drum ‘n’ Bass’, which won a coveted ‘Independent Music Award’ in Brazil. Two EPs followed, ‘17:42’ and ‘Aqui Não Tem Silêncio’, which lead to the band performing across Brazil and Europe, including storming performances at Le Tryptique in Paris and the Juicy Beats festival In Germany, alongside Coldcut and Jamie Lidell.
