Deeper Substance - A Label To Watch In 2007….

November 29, 2006

What does dance music mean to you? If it means commercial drivel, high-street clubbing, and chav house then kindly look away now. If, however, you?re partial to something a little more cerebral, then meet OrtzRoka?s stunning new production, ?T2?, another electronic broadside on Deeper Substance Records, one of the hottest young imprints on the block.

Half the pleasure of electronica is finding real gems, music you stumble across at derelict warehouses at 7am on a Saturday morning while trying to navigate your way home. That?s where you?ll find the Deeper Substance crew, a record label and group of like-minded individuals that?s fast becoming a byword for quality, dancefloor fare. If dance music ever died, then collectives like this have brought it kicking and screaming back to life.

Deeper Substance Records (DSR) embodies the finest traditions of acid house but with a distinctly Noughties attitude, their independent ethos and ear for the right artists has quickly afforded them an enviable reputation. Releases such as ?Gearbox? and ?D Drive?, from label head DEMI, CCCP?s ?Rakety?, and Justin Xara & DJ Criminal?s ?5000KW?, have brought them considerable attention from the world?s DJing community.

?T2? is the first artist release by OrtzRoka for DSR, and precedes more material ahead of a full artist album in 2007. Purely by letting their music do the talking, the elusive duo, aka Fab Ortiz and Charles Rokamora have quickly become ones to watch. After gaining notoriety for their Fix parties in London and DJ sets across London?s finest venues, OrtzRoka?s productions have been met with equal fervour, their edit of Rui Da Silva?s remix of CCCP’s ‘Rakety’ (DSR) claimed the No.2 spot in the Beatport Techno chart, and their remix of Justin Xara & DJ Criminal’s 5000KWTS (DSR) has been included on Nick Fancuilli’s recent compilation for Renaissance.

In ?T2?, OrtzRoka have delivered a stunning piece of electronic house that should carry letters after it?s name. Twisting 303?s and a tight groove make this a floor favourite, while flashes of glacial strings sweep across in moments of melodic brilliance. The track is heavily supported by DEMI, Desyn Masiello, Funk D?Void, and many more.

On the remix front, Leon Roberts (back from a hiatus with one of his first remixes for 4 years) provides a stunning retake, while rising Italian star Yoshie Chandler, aka Alex Kenji, delivers a serious club monster. If this wasn’t enough, France?s DJ Each brings a funk-fuelled serving of tech and flange to the menu and Kid Dub of Moodmusic fame offers something for those with Teutonic leanings.
