New York City’s Vinyl Life brings back old school

1/07/2009

It’s time to have some fun. The boys in Vinyl Life have been at it for years rocking classic Hip-Hop, rave and house cassettes while at the same time collecting an impressive array of vintage analog gear. Seriously pissed off with the lack of presentation in modern electronic music, Vinyl Life built their debut album from the ground up and it’s all about the live show. Think Joey Beltram meets The Jungle Brothers meets Fast Eddie meets The KLF.

A true live act, New York City’s Vinyl Life is comprised of founder/programmer Butcha, MC Phaze Future and Keyboardist Richie Roxx. The stage show is comprised of a full on “rig” of analog gear set up on the stage where Phaze Future stands front and center dropping his signature rhymes and making an instant connection with audiences. And since most Vinyl Life tracks feature lyrics, this show is much more exciting than 45 minutes of instrumentals. There’s a classic pop element here that’s hard to resist and it’s the “gear-only” philosophy that gives Vinyl Life a sound like no other. Studio tracks have a live feel because they are produced in a dub style – the mixing board is the main instrument.

With a needle-on-the-record crackle, “Hot Sauce” immerses in some fresh Hip-House packed with Phaze Future’s hysterical lyrics, vocodered choruses, P-Funk bassline and 4/4 beats. “Hi-Tops” takes it way back to the rave era, throbbing with all of those great elements that made it an inspirational time for dance music. Yes, sirens are included. “Bass Go Boom” ventures out into breakier territories matching jagged beats and heavy synths with lyrics that cite Brillo Pads, Weed and Blanka from Street Fighter. Next, we turn down another road and find the album’s ballad – “Electric Symphony (feat. Nite Club).” It’s pure robot love with vocals split between Richie Roxx and Butcha. We wash away the tears and get ready to boogie once again with “Innovation (Sebastian Marciano Remix).” This is the big room dance track of the album and it possesses quite an electro synth line. It’s simply massive.

“Like This” is the album’s first single and a classic sing-a-long for the breakdancers. You can listen to this song and imagine kids spinning on their heads. “Elevator Up,” “Future Beat” and “Etch-A-Sketch” provide some more Hip-House madness, while “Good Life (It’s More Fun To Compute)” is Vinyl Life’s ode to Kraftwerk and a pretty sick cover. Next, for a real pace changer the boys visit the islands and recruit dancehall prophet Uzimon who spits some tropic thunder on “Press Rewind.” And if Vinyl Life’s comedic side was not yet apparent, then look no further than their 2009 reworking of De La Soul’s “Take It Off.” This one features Prince Paul collaborator J-Zone and proves that the more times change the more they remain the same.

Team Waterpolo announce the release of new single ‘Letting Go’ in August

1/07/2009

Preston’s electro pop magicians Team Waterpolo return with a new single in August in the shape of ‘Letting Go’. Seasoned Waterpolo watchers will know the track in its demo form as the moment where the band first caught the public eye propelling them to the forefront of the web as MySpace featured artist of the week and bagging them an NME Single Of The Week into the bargain.

The track is a taster for the band’s debut album, recorded in France at Black Box Studios and is radically reinvented from the version familiar to the diehard fanbase. Across the formats the single comes back with new Team Waterpolo music in the form of ‘Return To Sender’ and ‘Sexual Ice Age’ alongside a club classic in waiting courtesy of a Starsmith remix of ‘Letting Go’.

The summer has already seen the lads spend a weekend in at Glastonbury Festival, playing three sets at the Queens Head, The Orange Stage and the Dirty Boots Stage, whilst July is all about the Secret Garden Party on Thursday 23rd July.

Mixmag Present ‘Big In The Bass

1/07/2009

DROP to the ground; take COVER by getting under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture; and HOLD ON on until the shaking stops. If there isn’t a table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch in an inside corner of the building.

Stay inside until shaking stops and it is safe to go outside.

From the kingdoms of drum and bass, dubstep, electro and house, we’ve assembled the biggest bassiest beasts around.

We’ve got Sub Focus, the hottest rising star in drum and bass. We’ve got Hatcha and N Type, original dubstep legends. We’ve got DJ Zinc, junglist supreme. We’ve got incredible new talent in the form of Crystal Fighters playing a full live set, the smokin’ hot Basque electro five piece already being talked about as the single most exciting live show in dance music. We’ve got the superfresh Boy 8 Bit, new young star of grinding epic electro. We’ve got the fantastic Filthy Dukes, London’s lords of indie dance, the party starting genius of Radio One’s Jaymo & Andy George, the dubbed out madness of High Rankin and the sheer dancefloor ignition of usual suspects People Are Germs and the Union DJs.

This is room shaking, floor trembling, speaker punishing, party rocking mayhem.

This is a solid ten on the Richter scale.

This is Mixmag Big In The Bass.

Bitch in Ibiza in July

1/07/2009

Another month another party marathon with Bitch. If you haven’t been in amongst it at a Bitch session – either in Ibiza, Leeds or Manchester – you certainly should be this month. In their summer home, BoHo – with its circular interior and opulently decorated confines– Bitch is likely to excel as drinks are cheap and entry prices are fair. You’ll also be treated to a state of the art light and sound installation and some all important pulsating electronica.

This month’s sounds come from:

Mason – a Dutch electro houser who, in the studio, remixes the works of Mylo, Luetzenkirchen for labels like CR2, Ministry of Sound, King Kong and Great Stuff. Having played institutions such as London’s Fabric and Germany’s Cocoon – this man is well versed in how to hold a dance floor in the palm of his hand.

Oliver Lang – a chunky and jacking man who acutely tailors his sets according to the dance floor vibe – be he spinning Judgment Sundays, Bora Bora or Ministry Of Sound – and who sites Danny Tanaglia as an main influence. That tells you all you need to know really.

Danny Savage – hard working DJ and promoter behind Leeds’ first and best fidget house and electro night, expect 4/4 from every nook of the genre.

H2 and Matteus complete the line ups and are beloved favourites of the Bitch crew wherever they happen to be playing. Perfect accompaniments to headliners, the pair wouldn’t keep getting air time if they couldn’t do the business.

It started in humble surrounds in drizzly, grimy Manchester, and flourished into a night Sankeys was quick to lock into regular sessions, so full and bouncing was the club, week-in, week-out. And now it is set to fully bloom under the Ibizan sky in what is fast becoming known as one of the Isle’s most beloved, intimate clubs – BoHo.
