Having drafted in Detroit legend Moodyman to round up 2007’s set of Deviation Sessions, Benji B returns to Gramaphone on Wednesday February 6th for the first of this year’s monthly shindigs.
Joining Benji on the decks for the February 6th event is respected Brooklynite Ge-Ology. Whether as a producer, DJ, or visual artist, Ge-Ology is a musical connoisseur who is famed for his ability to flawlessly span musical genres without limitation. Work with the likes of Tupac, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Pete Rock (to name just a few) further cements his credentials, but having also worked with Welsh songstress Jem on her recent album, Ge-Ology is not one to be pigeon-holed into the box marked hip hop.

Harmless Records keep up the pressure, with another top-notch ‘Watch The Ride’ from rising drum & bass superstar TC, accompanied by his MC partner in crime, Jakes, out January 21st. The high-octane mix features tracks by Sub Focus, Marky and Ben Westbeech, plus Lynx’s innovative anthem ‘Disco Dodo’ and three exclusives from TC himself.
As the quotes suggest, over the past year TC has joined the top-rank of drum and bass producers, gaining much well-deserved limelight for his turbo-fuelled anthems. When gracing the turntables, matters are no different, as the mix veers from the spiky synth lines of Crisssy Chris’ ‘Us’ and ‘Rubbish’ by Clipz, to classics (Marky & XRS’ ‘LK’), to the deep (‘Soul Time’ by TC and Jenna G’s ‘In Love’) to the cowbell insanity of ‘Druggy’ by Sub Focus and even old-school reggae jungle from Taxman (‘Too Bad VIP’).

On January 28th Great Stuff presents ‘A Thousand Nights’, the debut long-player by German producer Gregor Tresher. The album is a collection of deep, dancefloor-orientated tracks, existing somewhere between minimal, tech-house, techno and electro.
Add to this dark, trippy atmospherics and the result is a coherent body of quality electronic music. Moving from the understated minimal house of ‘Black Rain’ and subtle menace of ‘Running Systems’, the album slips into the uplifting, dream-like state of ‘A Thousand Nights’ and ‘Painkiller’, the latter reminiscent of deep, mid-nineties prog-house/electronica.

Mr Basshunter is sitting at No 1 in the midweeks, knocking off the X Factor winner. He’s achieved this without ANY national radio airplay.
DJ and Cyber Geek Jonas Altberg, aka Basshunter, wrote the European hit in his bedroom. The track, about his love for a girl he met on the internet, captured the hearts of Sweden and it went on to become an instant online phenomenon. It smashed its way to the top of the charts across Scandinavia and within weeks he had become their biggest debut selling artist ever!
With meteoric momentum Basshunter exploded internationally, going onto secure the number 1 spot in Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg. The track also caught on in Germany where it successfully stayed at the top end of the charts for six months! He’s now about to score his first UK No 1 with the English version of this track.

It was with a huge amount of excitement and some trepidation that DJ Marky & Friends launched in January 2005, with Marky’s first five hour set in the UK navigating totally uncharted territory in club land. The line up included Gilles Peterson and Bugz In The Attic, a marked step away from the conventional programming of drum & bass line ups in and around the capital. The night was one of the best ever here at The End, and one of the most pioneering drum & bass events in the world was born, pushing the boundaries of what people expected from a D&B night, paving the way for Andy C’s three hour sets at Ram, breaks and dubstep DJs in Shogun Audio’s main room and a rash of new nights round London featuring drum & bass DJs playing alternative sets.
In the years since, Marky’s hand-picked line ups have ranged massively, taken in some of the biggest names in drum & bass as guests, such as Fabio, Zinc and Goldie, taken DJs right out of their comfort zones with Marcus Intalex playing techno, High Contrast playing disco and Total Science playing old skool hip hop and had a massive variety of non drum & bass DJs grace the decks too, from Patrick Forge to Ben Westbeech to Norman Jay. For the third birthday party however, DJ Marky has concocted a line up that perhaps perfectly epitomises the ethos of DJ Marky & Friends, with an eight hour set from the man himself in the main room and the incredible Jazzanova in the lounge.

As Mark Knight explains, “This is the evolution of our Leaders Of The New School EP series, which gives artists the opportunity to release on a bigger label… both up-and-coming artists who are creating hot music that’s rocking dancefloors across the globe, AND artists that have been working the scene for years but not necessarily had the spotlight they deserve.”
