Everyone knows Exceeder, the massive club anthem which made it to No.3 in the UK pop charts following a mash up with Princess Superstar, but the story behind iO Music’s latest signing runs much deeper…
Born Lason Chronis, Mason has always had music in his blood. The son of a Dutch actress and a Greek sculptor at the tender age of six he knew he wanted to play violin and began taking lessons in classical and jazz music.
Sometime in his early teens he saw footage of hip-hop DJs in America and was hooked and even though he was too young to legally be allowed in bars he fast became a notable DJ on the local club scene. At the end of the ‘90s Mason’s profile was on the rise and he began to integrate his violin (with effects) into his DJ sets, needless to say this proved a hit and his DJ schedule went mental, just as he had begun studying Music Composition and Performance. After graduating he dropped his debut release Helikopter EP in 2004. Whilst DJ’ing in South America, Tiësto saw Mason perform and asked him to play electric violin alongside him during his Tiësto In Concert events which saw Mason tour the world as well as offer support DJ slots at selected events.

Harmless Records keep up the pressure, with another top-notch ‘Watch The Ride’ from rising drum & bass superstar TC, accompanied by his MC partner in crime, Jakes, out January 28. The high-octane mix features tracks by Sub Focus, Marky and Ben Westbeech, plus Lynx’s innovative anthem ‘Disco Dodo’ and three exclusives from TC himself.
As the quotes suggest, over the past year TC has joined the top-rank of drum and bass producers, gaining much well-deserved limelight for his turbo-fuelled anthems. When gracing the turntables, matters are no different, as the mix veers from the spiky synth lines of Crisssy Chris’ ‘Us’ and ‘Rubbish’ by Clipz, to classics (Marky & XRS’ ‘LK’), to the deep (‘Soul Time’ by TC and Jenna G’s ‘In Love’) to the cowbell insanity of ‘Druggy’ by Sub Focus and even old-school reggae jungle from Taxman (‘Too Bad VIP’).
TC on producing and DJing
‘I want to make music that can be enjoyed by anyone. I make every style of drum and bass because you never know where you are going to be playing. You might turn up to the gig and there’s 8000 people standing in front of you wanting you to smash it or maybe just 300, but you have to have the right tools in your box to get the job done and take them on a journey.’

On January 28th Great Stuff presents ‘A Thousand Nights’, the debut long-player by German producer Gregor Tresher. The album is a collection of deep, dancefloor-orientated tracks, existing somewhere between minimal, tech-house, techno and electro.
Add to this dark, trippy atmospherics and the result is a coherent body of quality electronic music. Moving from the understated minimal house of ‘Black Rain’ and subtle menace of ‘Running Systems’, the album slips into the uplifting, dream-like state of ‘A Thousand Nights’ and ‘Painkiller’, the latter reminiscent of deep, mid-nineties prog-house/electronica.
With its saw-wave bassline and sparkly riff, anthem ‘Full Range Madness’ was a peak of last year’s ‘Compilation F’ on Cocoon Records, winning support from many top DJs. The gear moves up a considerable notch on the growling, 6am darkness of ‘Anti’ before shifting subtly onto the jerky, click-house-gone-reverb-laden-techno of ‘Benthos’. The album closes with ‘The Good Life’, a classic piece of shiny, deep house.

Creative juices have been positively overflowing here in darkest London town during these past few months. Indeed, following Omid 16B’s third artist album (“Like 3 Ears and 1 Eye”) it’s already time for the second SexOnWax release of 2008 – and keeping it personal this time around is Navid Nourizadeh, younger brother of label founder Omid.
Navid has always shared his blood and bass brother’s passion for the electronic and has produced music since he was a teenager. In fact, Alola, a label Omid set up prior to SexOnWax, released one of Nav’s very first productions, the addictively deep ‘n’ techy “Space Chase”. The year was 1996, Nav was just 16 years young and “Space Chase” was just the beginning. Now, with over a decade of club and production experience under his belt, Navid returns, but this time to SexOnWax, and this time with a completely new inauguration, a debut three-track EP.

The Spaceman cometh.. French dance artist Shonky releases debut artist album ‘Time Zero’.
It has been clear since his very first release, in 2005 (with ‘Let Me Ask You’ on Freak n’Chic), that Shonky is an exceptionally talented producer. At 25 years of age and with little more than two years since his first production effort, Shonky releases his debut artist album ‘Time Zero’ on Dan Ghenacia’s Freak n’Chic imprint - get cosmic.

“The style of ‘Time Zero’ is kind of techno/hypno, with many roots coming from Detroit techno and San Francisco psychedelic house; always super hypnotic.. The album is spacey Shonky world, I used more pads, no vocals and all the tracks have an atmospheric feeling within. They all drive you into a universe which is why I gav
e them all spacey names.. Ultimately, I did what I do the best, danceable tracks.” - Shonky
