Freshly signed to the infamous, cult ‘indie’ label Stiff Records, Eskimo Disco are only the second band in 20 years to be signed by the label alongside recent newcomers The Enemy.
“What Is Woman?” is an electro-funk sci-fi stomp that wouldn’t sound out of place on the soundtrack to a 2007 version of Barbarella. Produced by Apollo 440’s Howard Gray at Apollo Studios, Eskimo Disco’s studio sound has taken a stride away from the synthesized uber pop of their past by capturing the raw energy that resonates from their live sets. Gray’s experience of producing acts from The Cure to Art Brut over a career spanning 20 years is the perfect match for Eskimo Disco’s eclectic sound.

Opening a whole new chapter in the vibrant British music scene, Stateless are one of the most exciting young bands of 2007. Blending guitars with electronics, orchestral strings with turntable beats, this sonically adventurous five-piece band have a depth and a power far beyond their years. They come from Leeds, an increasingly hip breeding ground for fresh musical talent in the north of England, but their songs transcend scenes, genres and international borders.

Tom Findlay was in HMV the other day. The instore radio station was playing a song. A melancholic but at the same time uplifting song, soulfully old-school but technologically of-the-moment, rich with hazy brass and beats. “If you’re fond of sand dunes and salty air…” Findlay, absent-mindedly browsing the racks, nodded appreciatively. Top tune, that. It took him a good two minutes to realise that, hang on, that was his tune. It was At The River, a song he and his partner Andy Cato had dreamt up a few years earlier.
That’s what happens when you’re in Groove Armada. You create and pull together ideas in a poky little studio – a house bassline here, a dug-out-of-the-crates sample there, stonking brand-new choruses everywhere – and hey disco: a new song by your band. But pretty soon the new songs don’t belong to you any more. They belong to clubbers, and gig-goers, and Top 40-watchers, and festival masses, and Lovebox regulars, and the three million people who own your albums. Even if they’re used to advertise cars, in one of the most iconic campaigns of the last couple of years, they’re still, at the end of the day, people’s tunes.
