From a backyard party in the company of 200 party-crazed Aussies, local police and environmental health workers back on June 2001 (!), to a sell-out crowd of 20,000 up-for-it clubbers on the glorious grounds of Clapham Common (for the 3rd year running) and a debut sell-out festival in Cardiff on the August Bank Holiday Weekend 2006…
the South West Four gang have certainly come a long way since those humble, yet hedonistic early days. In the space of only 6 years, South West Four London has shot through the ranks to become Southern England’s leading outdoor event and one of Europe’s most important dance festivals, with South West Four Cardiff flying the flag in Wales. 2006 was a historic year for South West Four London – named after the London postcode it resides in, where tickets sold out in record time well ahead of the actual day of reckoning.
In fact, over 5,000 people were turned away in total, as the realism of just how big the festival has become really hit home. South West Four Cardiff was also deemed an instant success with all 10,000 tickets being snapped up, as an all-star cast of DJs including Carl Cox, Paul Oakenfold and Armin Van Buuren rocked the show. Back in London, Carl Cox and Paul Oakenfold did the double, as Pete Tong, John Digweed and Judge Jules also lead the troops from the front. South West Four picked up 4 nominations at the UK Festival Awards 2006 for Best Medium-To-Large Festival and Best One Day Festival (both London) and Best One Day Festival and Best New Festival (both Cardiff).

What does it take to be heralded as the ‘godfather’ of a scene? Firstly, I guess, you have to have been pushing your trade for a respectable amount of time – a couple of years just won’t cut it. Secondly, you have to be groundbreaking and pioneering – making and playing music that nobody else is. Thirdly, you have to leave a legacy – something that people can remember you by when you’ve hung up your headphones, sent your vinyl off to Oxfam and decided to open a bed and breakfast in Clacton-on-Sea instead.

The festival will also be bigger than ever, with a handful of new areas bringing the total to fifteen. Rennie Pilgrem Presents The TCR Allstars (Live)

EQ Recordings continues its tradition of releasing premium quality electronic music with its next edition of the Balance Series. Canadian DJ/ Producer Luke Fair has worked his magic on Balance 011, and it’s been well worth the wait. Luke has carved quite a reputation for himself as a producer and passionately experimental DJ, making him the perfect choice to follow previous luminaries such as James Holden, Chris Fortier, Phil K, Paolo Mojo, Desyn Masiello, Anthony Pappa and Jimmy Van M.
Luke Fair’s music can be described as groovy, funky, housey and techy - all at the same time!! He has created a signature style for himself by creating and re-editing versions of songs for his own sets. In the studio, his genre-crossing productions run the gamut from dub house to melodic progressive.
“The mood of my Balance mix captures the sound of an entire night at a club, a full set from open to close. Starting out with deep house, then playing funky house and techno and continuing with melodic progressive towards the end. Every track has been heavily edited to personalize the mix a bit more, with lots of layering to make the whole thing as colourful as possible,” says Luke.
