Jill Sinclair, who set up ZTT Records with her husband Trevor Horn, has been seriously hurt after being shot accidentally in the neck by her son with an air riffle in the garden of their home near Henley, Oxfordshire, on Sunday night.
A company spokesman said: “Purely accidentally she took a pellet in the neck. She is stable but critical.”
Ms Sinclair, 54, remains unconscious in an intensive care unit in hospital.
The pellet, which was fired by her 22-year-old son during a target practice session, hit an artery.
The company spokesman said it was too early to tell at this stage whether Ms Sinclair would suffer brain damage from the injury.
The couple have four children, three girls and a boy, and the youngest is aged 11.
ZTT Records enjoyed considerable success with bands such as Frankie Goes To Hollywood and The Art of Noise.
In the 1990s ZTT became a successful dance label boasting names like Seal and Adamski.
Ms Sinclair, a former maths teacher, married her record producer husband 26 years ago.
Infinite Potential, the north-London based production duo behind the legendary ?Stay Tuned? and ?Pick ?N? Mix? tapes, are back with their IP Oddcasts ? a fortnightly foray into to all things beats-based and funky.
Dropping on the 1st and 15th of every month jam-packed with funk, soul and hip hop classics and completely free, they have already become an
essential fixture in many music lovers calendars. The fifteen-minute mixes? themes already include ?Valentines?, ?Crime? and ?The 10p
Oddcast?, which was mixed entirely from records bought for 10p at Camden Market (and included everything from Kool & The Gang to Richard
Clayderman!) But the Oddcasts are much more than just well-mixed compilations, as they also showcase Infinite Potential?s original
material, with regular collaborators Amber MC, Dizraeli and soulstress Lea Lea Jones featuring on the eclectic stream of new productions.
Infinite Potential themselves are made-up of Kojak and The Soulful Spider, who joined forces at the turn of the century with the
unofficial aim to ?keep making beats until their hearts stop beating and the world collapses into itself.? Two EPs on Brighton-based
Catskill Records later and they can now count Morcheeba, The Nextmen, Yoda and Portishead as fans, while a headlining slot at 93 Feet East
last year saw the IP Live Band raise the roof in the main room.
Since February this year the Oddcasts have already built up a dedicated following of aural pleasure seekers, so see what you?re missing and

Cocoon is one of the world?s most exciting and well-respected international club nights. The night has built its unblemished reputation largely on the success of their Frankfurt venue and six sensational summer seasons in Ibiza, where their Monday night parties at Amnesia has attracted an enormous and fiercely loyal following across Europe. With the ?Godfather of Techno?, Sven Vath, at the helm, and regular guests including the much-feted Ricardo Villalobos, Richie Hawtin and Luciano, the music is unsurpassable, the DJs unmatched and the atmosphere one of hedonism and sheer abandon.
Their carefully selected residencies, including Frankfurt, Ibiza, Madrid and Rotterdam now takes in a regular London stop as the Cocoon revelers descend upon The End. Their launch at The End in March was laced with the kind of mayhem only Sven Vath is capable of creating as he embarked upon a marathon all-night session.
Cocoon are now gearing up for their second assault on The End, with a line up studded with the leading lights in the new generation of cutting-edge DJs and producers making waves right now. James Holden will be taking to the main room turntables for a set that will showcase his renowned eclecticism. Rising to prominence through his 1999 breakthrough track ?Horizons?, his production work since has refused to be pigeon-holed as he touches on everything from electro to tech house to minimal. His DJ sets embrace the same unorthodox spirit; a unique blend of his own productions, acid house, techno, electro and downtempo with an underlying focus on melody that has won him an army of followers.
Joining him at the main room controls will be Germany?s Loco Dice. Dice?s warped, warm, pioneering sets of techy house, electro and minimal are true crowd pleasers ? his performance at The End on New Years Day will stick in the memory for years to come! With releases on Ovum and Cocoon, plus the dancefloor melting ?Seeing Through Shadows? on M_Nus fast becoming one of the tunes of the summer, he?s one of the hottest producers around right now.
Secretsundaze promoter and resident James Priestley completes the main room line up. The runaway success of his parties over the last few years has earned him a loyal following. His unique style behind the decks sees him swing from minimal house and techno to 4/4 grooves through to punk-funk, disco and forgotten classics. Perfectly in tune with the dance floor, James knows exactly how to get a party moving, and is a fantastic addition to the Cocoon chaos.
The lounge boasts an equally impressive line up with the other half of Secretsundaze, Giles Smith, joining Dominik Eulberg, one of the dance world?s hottest properties, and Cocoon favourite Tobi Neumann. This superbly diverse selection of DJs will be drenching the room with their own unique sounds; expect to see the lounge rocking!
In AKA, Blonde will be providing the perfect foil to the havoc being reaped by Cocoon downstairs. Special guest Ralph Lawson and residents Luke vB and Tim Red will be supplying a sound track of the finest deep, dirty, techy house music. Blonde has been a fixture at AKA for five years now, with its cutting edge music policy and friendly, inclusive vibe continuing to attract a loyal crowd in 2006.
Every Saturday The End & AKA join together to present: ?As One? 2300/0700 - ?16 The End & AKA, ?12 NUS, ?10 AKA only - Advance tickets (?15) available from: www.endclub.com / www.ticketweb.co.uk call 08700 600 100 - Fully licensed bar until close

Carlos Manaca. One of the hardest working dj’s I have ever had the pleasure to speak with sits down for a bit to chat about what’s going on over at Magna Recordings, what his favorite club and who he would like to make a record with. You may know him from his work on his own label, or you may know him by his work on Stereo or Beatfreak. But if your a vinyl junkie like I am, you can go back to Tribal Portugal with his 1995 track entitled “Oporto Deep Cuts” EP. Carlos has made a name for himself in and out of the dj booth and recording studio. Not only a great guy, but an amazing person. Here is what he has to say:
How about we go way back to when you first started to dj.
- I started as a second dj at my hometown’s club in 1986, as i was very good friend of the resident dj there i and was really passionate for all the electronic music that was coming out by that time. Then, when he left, i became the resident dj until 1989, when i moved to Oporto ( north of Portugal ) at the age of 19 to become the resident dj of a big club called “Piramide”.
How did you start in the studio?
As a producer I started when i met Paulo Rocha ( Paul Jays ), in 1992 when he performed a live act at the club where I was the resident dj. Then I started to go to his studio and i collaborated in their release on Tribal America as O.L.N. - “Oporto Deep Cuts”, in 1995, doing an remix of “Reboot”, the main track.
When did you realize that your passion for music would take you to where you are now?
- Never ! I never planned anything of what’s been happening on my dj/producer career… I never thought that I would be playing in Japan, where I’m going right now! It’s still like a dream, when I’m able to do what I like to do and still get paid for that. I feel very fortunate having this kind of life…
What influenced you?
- As i said before, i was strongly influenced by the electronic tracks coming out around the 80’s. I always liked music, but i was never a big fan of the big rock bands of that time. I hated ( and still do ) distorted rock guitars ! I remember the first 7″ i bought, with my own money, being O.M.D.’s “Enola Gay” ( which i still have ) in 1982. After that, i was into Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” ( a very big influence on me ) as it was so well produced, with a lot of new sounds and rhythms, completely different of everything by that time… Also A-HA, Depeche Mode ( another big influence ), Erasure, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, all that electronic bands were big influences on me.
When/where was the first place you spun at?
- It was at a students party at my school, in my hometown, Barreiro ( near Lisbon ), and my legs were shaking…
Do you remember the first 12″ you purchased?
- I do remember my first 7″, it was Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark’s “Enola Gay” as 12″s only came much later… my first 12″s, were Indeep’s “Last Night a Dj Saved My Life” and New Order’s “Blue Monday”.
Are there any dj’s or producers that influenced your sound?
- One of my main influences, as a dj, was Portugal’s Dj Vibe ( by that time called T? Pereira, his real name ). He’s a very good dj, and has always been one of Portugal’s dj references, since i can remember. I remember to go to “Alcantara Mar” and “Kremlin” where he was resident dj, just to listen to him playing.
As a producer i was influenced by Paulo Rocha ( my partner at Magna and Magnetica ), Danny Tenaglia, and lately by Chus & Ceballos, for me two of the best worldwide producers right now.
Name your perfect party
- Well, I have a very wide musical taste so it had to be a party with two dancefloors. On one dance floor I’d have Danny Tenaglia, Roger Sanchez, Dj Vibe, Victor Calderone, Chus & Ceballos. On the other I’d have Masters At Work, Kevin Yost, Miguel Migs.
If you could have a residency at any club world wide, which one would it be?
- From the ones I know it had to be “Womb” in Tokyo, Japan. The crowd is really up for it, and you can really play very different tracks, not only big room tunes. I really enjoy myself every time i play there.
If you could make a record with 3 dj’s or producer who would they be?
- Well, one it would be with Dj Vibe. The other i already made it, with Chus & Ceballos ( “The Strong Rhythm” ). The 3rd would be with Danny Tenaglia.
What is it like running your record label?
- A lot of problems and not much money… but its something i really enjoy doing…
What are your top 3 all time records.
For me there are actually 4 that some how changed my life,
- New Order “Blue Monday” it took me 6 months to get it !
- Michael Jackson “Thriller” THE album
- Deep Dish “Penetrate Deeper” changed a lot of people’s minds
- Danny Tenaglia “Elements” almost every track of that album ROCKED !
What gear do you like to use in the dj booth?
- I like the RANE MX1016 mixer, the Pioneer CDJ1000 CD players and the Pioneer FX1000 effect unit. Pioneer have recently came up with two very good mixers: DJM800 and DJM1000 which i think have a very good sound.
Everyone is debating vinyl vs cd. What’s your take on it.
- I remember 10 years ago, when CD became popular ( especially when CD recorders started to have an accessible price ), people saying that vinyl would end shortly. But digital sound was not as good as it is today, so vinyl did not end, and against all opinions, it even had a “boom” in the late 90’s, well into 2000, 2001, 2002… dance orientated vinyl labels had a very good period then, selling well, and everybody thought that the numbers would continue to rise in the next years. Then the peer-to-peer programs showed up. I remember in the very beginning of Napster and Kazaa thinking it was curious to have that amount of tracks available for free in the Internet. But I also thought that some how that could lead to serious problem to Labels if it become massive, and so i was expecting that big Companies would see the danger and deal with it, a.s.a.p.. They didn’t, and by the same time Pioneer released the CDJ100 CD player ( they first had the CDJ500, which was not very trustful ). People started to use it and the free file sharing became massive, as the Internet speed connections were faster and cheaper each month it went by. So now i clearly see the end of vinyl ( except that if the International laws manage to block the major peer-2-peer servers, giving vinyl’s a “extended” life breath ), as everything is clearing pushing that way. Almost every week vinyl Labels close, or simply decide to go only digital, which is pushing the digital format into DJs and lately into the main public. Obviously, we all knew that vinyl would end one day ( it’s 50 years old ! ), but i was expecting not in this way. We would continue to press vinyl’s until at least, it pays for it self, but i can clearly see the end of it… unfortunately.
Traveling all over the world, can you name your favorite club and why.
- Luckily, I’ve played in very good clubs worldwide, but I have to mention “Womb”, in Tokyo, Japan, because the club is very nice, the sound is very good ( Phazon ) but especially because the crowd is really up for it !
In your productions, what do you try to accomplish the first day?
- It depends. Sometimes i try to get the groove going, sometimes i try to find sounds that inspire me and give me a direction. I don’t actually have a method… but i should!
How would you describe your sound?
- Its difficult for me to describe it. It has to rely on a solid base, an organic feel, normally with some kind of percussion. Then comes a good bass line, some hypnotic sounds, synth’s, and vocals when possible. I think that the vocals add that extra factor to the track, making it recognizable..
If you could remix one track, which one would it be?
- I think that if you’re going to do a remix, you should feel that you could add something to the original. There are a lot of tracks that I would not dare to remix, as the original sound so timeless. One that i would like to remix ( and I’m going to, even if it’s only for myself ) it’s Masters at Work “Sume Sigh Say”, out on Freeze, 1994.
What platform do you make your tracks on?
- Logic Audio.
Any words of advice to the up coming dj or producer?
- Just believe in what you’re doing and spend time in the studio, if you want to reach a bigger audience. Before, being a good dj (normally) would be enough to get yourself known… now, you have to have records out, to take your name as a dj to another level… I think that’s the best way to stand out.
What do you have in the works for us?
- I just finished a remix of Victor Calderone’s “Give It Up” which was a track that really became one of my “trademarks” some years ago. I never thought I could remix it, and when Victor asked me if I wanted to do it, I could not believe it. It was a lot of hard work ( especially because he did not have any parts of the original for me to work on ) but i think i’ve done a good “upgrade” of it. I’m also doing something with Paulo Rocha, my partner, and I am also planning on doing some tracks with Eric Entrena and Roman Lieske.
So the interview is over, I thank Carlos for his time on the phone then Carlos gets back to work in the studio. He’s just finished his remix of “Give It Up” and he tells me some juicy info on his other up coming projects.
Keep your ear on the ground. Because chances are if you hear a rumble, it’s being made by Carlos Manaca.
Go to www.carlos-manaca.com where you can keep up to date with Carlos and Magna Recordings.

This year Azuli at El Divino, Ibiza has been given a slight alteration. No, it?s not the new slot on Wednesday night, nor the brand spanking
new sound system and d?cor, but the involvement of international promoter Charlie Chester.
Famed for making Circo Loco at DC10 one of the most sought after parties on the island, Charlie packed up shop last year ready for his next challenge, and landed in Singapore at super club Attica.
On choosing Charlie for the job, Dave said ?Charlie is Charlie! He knows just about everyone in the business and Jo Mills was working with us so it just seemed right we work together?.
The Chester himself hopes to add a little of the magic to Azuli he has sprinkled on the parties he promotes at Attica in Singapore and now at their new venue in Shanghai. Azuli at El Divino is already set to be one of the most happening house music hangouts on the island with their trademark sound of electronic edged house music and with the glamorous clubbers who go there.
Charlie comments ?Azuli?s first year in Ibiza was brilliant, I know as Jo Mills (my wife) played a few time’s and when Dave Piccioni asked if
I fancied helping this year to take it another level, it was not hard to say yes! The line-ups are very sharp and with Jo being made new
resident… roll on Wednesday?s at El Divino!!?
This isn?t the first time Attica and Azuli have rubbed shoulders. Azuli toured at the Singapore venue this February and will be doing the same
again this winter so the two promotions are already a successful, tried and tested cocktail.
Together will be taking your breath away again on Saturday 29th July as our latest dancefloor masterpiece draws upon the talents of some of the world?s leading deck-techians to supply the higher state of consciousness we all crave every month down at the ?Mills.
There?s no escaping the hugeness of July?s affair, as the main room air will be filled by the acid house stabs of Ovum Records? legendary Josh Wink and the slick n? sexy sounds of France?s F*ck Me I?m Famous superstar David Guetta. Josh last played Turnmills back in the days of former weekly Saturday night session Headstart. So it?s with great excitement that we look forward to bringing the ex-resident back to the club after all these years!! Joining him will be 3 x House Music Awards winner and global icon David Guetta, who kicked off Together as a monthly bash in January. It?s fair to say that his set that night pretty much blow the roof clean off, so having patched it back together, I guess we should put the builders on standby again ready for another hammering from Guetta!! Also on the main room menu is Gigolo Records? underground Abe Duque ? who jets in from the States to make his Together debut on the night. Abe is one of the hottest new names on the planet and he?s remixed forthcoming releases for fellow Together guests Motor and the Pet Shop Boys. Together resident rocker Justin Robertson returns for more hooky techno spin backs, plus we welcome new bi-monthly resident Anil Chawla to team as a fully fledged member. Anil has graced the decks at Together on numerous occasions over the years, as one of house music?s most exciting DJ/Producers we want to back him all the way.
T2 meanwhile witnesses a mini-French invasion as the coolest label on the planet - Ed Bangers Records, send their top troops across the pond. Label boss (and Daft Punk manager) Pedro Winter will be manning the decks together with Justice ? the hottest production duo of the year, who ride into London on the wave of the resounding success of the smash indie/dance crossover single ?Never Be Alone? (Vs Simian). There?s also more underground shenanigans from the hero-worshipped Headman and techno outfit Motor (Bryan Black), plus rising star Dan Van Damn returns for a 2nd warm up set after impressing us in April.
Then out back, X-FM?s John Kennedy presents another classic Midnight Ramble line-up featuring an exclusive headline live show from our very special Australian guests The Presets (signed to Modular Records ? the uber-chic label that gave us Cut Copy and Wolfmother) alongside some of his favourite new acts too. Step forward electronic duo Devil?s Gun - who?ve been causing all kinds of rawkus reactions around town, plus ravey dudes Man Like Me. The impeccably on-the-money IDC returns too, whilst upstairs in Topfloor the room will be hosted by Pass the Joypad featuring an 80?s/90?s Soundtrack (spun by 10:4 Rubber Duckie & Nikolas Esselle), Andy & Ed?s Legendary Swap Shop, Salacious Slinky Racing, Retro Computer Games, Mullets, Shellsuits & cans of Quatro. And finally? those crazy Fischseeksbicycle people will have you laughing on their gas all night long! The dirty swines.
** Prizes will be awarded for the Best Dressed 80?s/90?s Throwbacks!!

Following the inception of Viva in Ibiza last summer, the amazing turnout for Lawler?s Viva party at the Miami Winter Music Conference, and with his new online label Viva Music about to launch, we present Viva ? The Album.
Viva is spread over three discs, defining Day 1, Day 2 and Day 3 ? reflecting the sound of Lawler in 2006. With Day 3 a beautiful electronic mix of heartfelt minimal and leftfield sounds, this album is a departure from the straight club sets of previous compilation releases and reflects a deeper side to Lawler. Taking things one step further, Lawler has also meticulously re-edited many of the tracks especially for the album. Viva is a must hear album that will further cement Steve Lawler?s reputation as one of the world?s leading DJ?s. Lawler remains the definitive DJ and producer, with an acute ear for a tune and a technical ability that is second to none.
Steve Lawler will be taking Viva on the road on a 30 date world tour this summer, criss-crossing North America and Europe, with a substantial stop-off in the Balearics. In Ibiza, there will be six special Viva parties at Pacha, and Steve, of course, plays Space?s opening party on the 4th June.
For your chance to win one of three copies of this fantastic CD just email us here with the subject “Viva” for your chance to win ! - closing date Thursday 29th June…
The Mean Fiddler, promoters of the Carling Weekend: Reading and Leeds Festival ,have announced that all tickets for this year?s event are now completely sold out.
From the extra allocation of tickets announced on Friday 16th June, 2,000 remained after those who had pre-ordered in the hope of tickets took up their respective allocations. These were sold in minutes of phone lines opening to general sale this morning at 9am.
Carling Weekend: Reading and Leeds Festival, the UK?s largest festival takes place from Friday August 25th to Sunday August 27th at the legendary Richfield Avenue site in Reading and the stunning Bramham Park site near Leeds and features headline performances from Muse, Franz Ferdinand and Pearl Jam alongside over 150 bands, cabaret performers and comedians.
Demand for tickets for this year?s festival was the greatest ever but, for those who were unsuccessful, you can still watch the festival on BBC2 and BBC3 or listen to the bands on BBC Radio One over the Bank Holiday weekend.
More than 40 years after the Beatles and the Rolling Stones featured on the first edition, the BBC is to scrap Britain?s longest-running music television show, ?Top of the Pops.?
From its 1964 launch at the height of Beatlemania, the weekly countdown of Britain?s top-selling singles has tracked the ever-changing musical tastes of the younger generation.
The rise of 24-hour music TV channels such as MTV and Internet downloads sounded the death knell for the show.
At its peak, the program attracted tens of millions of viewers in Britain and nearly 100 other countries.
But the BBC, Britain?s publicly funded broadcaster, said the show could not compete with rivals that enable viewers to ?consume music of their choice any time night or day.?
DJ Dave Lee Travis said the BBC?s flagship music show had ?run its natural course?.
Travis, who hosted the show between 1972 and 1984, said the ?world is just too fast moving? for the weekly show.
He said it was a ?shame?, adding that the popularity of music downloads had led to the programme?s demise.
The final edition of Top of the Pops, which began in 1964, will be aired on 30 July, the BBC announced on Tuesday.
Coca-Cola says it will close its British online music service mycokemusic.com on July 31, after losing market share to Apple Computer?s iTunes Music Store.
Mycokemusic launched in Britain in January 2004 and quickly became the biggest online music download service there in brand recognition and sales. But it was overtaken later in the year by iTunes, which launched a dedicated UK site in June 2004.
Mycokemusic posted notice of the closure on its Web site. Mycokemusic also sent e-mails to music fans who had registered with the site.
Coca-Cola had positioned the site as a mix of brand promotion and music store.

Sonique?s latest track has been doing the rounds on dance floors world wide and nestling its way to the hot spots of some of the industry?s most prestigious charts.
Released on Azuli Silver on 26th June, ?Tonight? has been produced by non-other than Haji & Emanuel, so it?s no wonder that ?Tonight? is turning out to be such a hit with producers like that behind the record, plus remixes from man of the moment Kurd Maverick.
Now if these chart positions don?t say summer hit all over them, I don?t know what does…
On the support front we?ve seen Steve Smart, Graeme Park, Jon Ulysees, Andi Durrant, and Seamus Haji plus loads more all spinning this tune.
Whether yours is the summery vocal lead or the mucked up dirty sound of Kurd Maverick, just make sure it?s, erm…. ?Tonight?!!
Azuli Silver ? ?Traditional Azuli vocal house with melody and beats?

The hype surrounding the biggest club launch to hit the nation for years spread like ripples across clubland. For weeks, people strained to hear what was going on behind the covered glass frontage within the Printworks development, and could only detect the buzz of workmen hard at their toil; could only imagine at what would result from their labours. And for weeks, a simple message went across on flyers and posters across the north ? believe the hype!
Well, the wait is over. You believed, and now you will be rewarded for that belief. On Friday June 30th the doors will be thrown open for the first time on a brand new superclub. Pure. Manchester has always been a focus for house music and dance culture, and once again will be the epicentre of the action, with the most important new venture in the scene for many years located in the pulsing heart of this city.
Backed by some of the wisest heads in clubland, the existing space has been gutted and completely rebuilt. ?2.5million and several months later, we have a gorgeous 2,500 capacity club, spread over different rooms, different floors. Pure does exactly what it says on the tin? a nightclub in its purest form where the most important aspects, such as a ?300,000 Funktion 1 soundsystem, and the latest licence in the city (6am) were the first items for consideration.
Aside from that, and the massive Main Room, there?s the Blue Room, the Player?s Lounge (offering VIP and dining facilities) and V.V.I.P. private rooms for after-shows etc, which are accessed by their own entrance, and private lift, offering secure and secluded views over the rest of the club. There is the potential for gigs and live music, as well as the stand-alone Magic Bar, with barmen trained in the art of close-up magic.
The party kicks off at the end of June, and who better to launch this rather fabulous venue than the good people at hed kandi, including David Dunne, Andrew Daniels and Jason Vereker. The party will be broadcast live on Galaxy Radio from 11pm, so if you can?t make it down to this auspicious occasion? be sure to turn on, tune in, and bounce around your living room. hed kandi will be back once a month as part of the roster of Fridays, under the Pure Sessions badge? with yet more exciting Friday parties to be announced in due course.
The fiesta continues on the Saturday with the launch of the Saturdays Are Pure. The brief is clear - more of an up-front affair with DJ Bodum (www.dj-bodum.com) filling the heavenly space of Main Room with some celestial disco, and the soundtrack in the Funktion Room will be more funky house in orientation.
This promises to be the biggest summer party to hit clubland outside of that little rock in the Med. The dance scene seems to have lost its way of late, morphing into all manner of freakish directions. But this? this is the distillation of what it was? and remains? all about.

If you don’t know the man behind such classic house tracks as “The Freaks Come Out”,”House Is A Feeling” and “House Music”, well then, your about to.
His name is Cevin Fisher and he started out dj’ing at his fathers clubs and local college parties when he was a teenager. His first real gig was a basement party in East Orange NJ. After spending some time on the decks and gaining some experience, he landed a residency at Club Zanzibar. Club Zanzibar was one of the leading spots for the garage house music scene during it’s time. Tony Humphries was the resident at the time and influenced young Cevin’s sound. Also responsible influencing his sound is Francois K of Zanzibar and Studio 54 along with Larry Levan of the Paradise Garage. It was there, at Zanzibar that Cevin got his chance to really showcase his personality through his sets. During that same time he also started his remixing skills in the studio. Danny Tenaglia was the one who convinced him to pursue more original work, and in 1996 Cevin created “The Way We Used To” (Maxi Records). Two years later he made the single “The Freaks Come Out”. The song landed him into his current position as a DJ and producer, one that is well into the hierarchy of the dance music world. Fast forward eight years and I’m calling Cevin for this interview. Cevin picks up on the third ring and after a few minutes of introductions we start the interview.
Cevin Fisher has a story to tell. And your the one who he wants to tell it to.
So Cevin, how long ago did you start dj’ing and where did you get your start?
I started DJ’ing at one of my fathers clubs “Tingles” in NJ.
Who would you say influenced you in regards to your sound?
Well, I was first influenced by DJ Danny and later Larry Levan, Tony Humphries and also Francois K.
Where did you get your first experience as a DJ?
I first started at neighborhood parties , school parties , wedding receptions , college parties . Yeah my first real gig was a basement party in East Orange NJ.
You used to play at club Zanzibar, it was the mecca for the garage scene. What was that like?
Well Zanzibar was a special club in NJ it was the closest thing to the Paradise Garage. It had the best sound system in NJ at the time. It was a Richard Long system. The place rocked!
Two words that would describe your sound would be?
Tribal and Soulful.
What labels do you keep a look out for?
Well ever since I stopped using vinyl it’s really hard to say. I get a lot of one off tracks sent to me. I do love labels like Stealth and Stereo.
“House Is A Feeling” stays in my bag. You can hear the influences of Leven and Humphries in it. I have to know how you make such a great track?
“House is A Feeling” was created by me and my partner Cliff St. Cyr at Hardtrax Records. I found an old gospel tape of my moms, and it had some great samples which totally motivated me to come up with the concept.
What’s Cevin Fishers top 5 records, all time?
Ribbon In The Sky
Imagine
Better When We’re Together
Ooh Mama Mama
Music Is The Way I Live
If there is one track that you could remix, which one would it be?
“Music Is The Way I Live”
How do you prepare for a gig?
I usually start one week before. Just getting all my downloads together and mixing at home.
And how do you pack your bag?
Well I usually pack according to the gig)s) I am playing .. So there’s a lot of shuffling of CD’s, I would say I sort them by genre.
What’s your favorite club?
Pacha New York.
Where do you get your music from?
Luckily, I get a lot of music directly from the labels and promotion companies. I also use Beatport.
If you could tag team with another DJ who would it be?
I’m not really a big fan of tag teaming , I have done it before after a complete set. But I would have to say me and my friend Hector Romero.
Opening DJ’s. Love them or hate them?
I think opening DJ’s is a great idea, because you give a shot to someone trying to get noticed .There’s definitely an art to it, if done properly, it should set the
next DJ up and keep the flow of the night going.
Who’s your favorite DJ?
I have a few and it would be to hard to say who is my favorite. So here’s a list:
Danny Tenaglia, Roger Sanchez, Louie Vega, Tony Humphries, Junior Vasquez. These are the DJ’s I grew up listening to. I love to hear a lot of the new guys
as well.
Any words to the up and coming DJ’s?
If you love what you do and your patient, the sky is the limit.
How do you tackle your work in the studio?
Well my day usually starts in the studio creating or remixing. I do it in spurts. I still don’t like to force it, so I sometimes move from project to project.
Any favorite program or gear you like to use?
Well I am a big fan of Logic , Protools, Trilogy, Atmosphere and Stylus Rmx to name a few.
I heard a rumor about you doing your own label, give us the dirt.
Yes, I will be launching my own label “Limelight Recordings” this summer.
Any words for the people who have supported you?
Indeed, I would like to say thanks to each and everyone who played my records and or just danced to my music over the years. It’s been a long crazy ride and
we’re just getting started.
Anything else we should know?
I have also started a residency at Pacha NYC and can be seen there on a monthly basis.
Cevin goes back to his work in his studio and I thank him for his time. Between starting his own record label, his work in the studio and having a residency at one of New Yorks premier clubs, Cevin is one busy guy. You can check Cevin’s website for updates on his production work and DJ schedule. His next apperance at Pacha is Friday June 30th with Angel Moraes.
