MYNC Interview

200606291921
Q: You’re track current ‘Something on my mind’ stated out being called’ Edge of seventeen’ with a Stevie Nicks sample. Where did the idea for the track come from?

We heard the track in the film ‘School Of Rock’ and instantly thought that it was an idea that could work. We got hold of the soundtrack and listened to the song over and over again, it was such an uplifting song yet the subject matter of ‘Edge Of Seventeen’

was very personal to Stevie Nicks as it was about the death of her uncle and John Lennon. We tried to keep the emotion of the original version, yet add elements that would work on a dancefloor today. We were pleased that clubbers and djs alike felt the version we did.

Q: It’s been snapped up by Matt Jaggers new Apollo label. Did you think the track would cause so much interest?

Edge was already proving to be quite a big track, but we couldn’t clear the sample, so we had the basis of a big record but it was up to us to come up with a new song that retained the vibe of ‘Egde of Seventeen’ we felt confident that ’something on your mind’ was a strong version and when Pete Tong played it for the first time we were so thrilled and it sounded great! Matt and James at Apollo were both very big fans of the new version and we were pleased that they picked it up for the UK. We never thought it would get to the stage of making videos, pushing for playlists etc, we made the track because we though it was a good idea and really liked the original version.

Q: Abigail Bailey is the vocalist on the track, how did your team up with her?

Once we knew we had to record a new version, we started looking for songwriters and singers, Abigail was approached and with her writing partner Mark Hoey, came up with a demo version of ‘Something On Your Mind’ we really liked it and so got together in the studio to lay it down, Abigail has a great voice and was the perfect choice to sing the new version. The finished version was then played to a musicologist to make sure the version was different enough to the Edge version so that there would be no problems in regards to sampling issues, arrangement, copright infringements, he cleared it and we were free to do what we liked with ‘Something On Your Mind’

Q: Who’s remixed the track?

Its quite a big remix package, Switch, Steve Mac, Danny Freakazoid, Aaron Mclleland, SoulSeekerz have all given it a tweak!

Q: The track has all the makings of an Ibiza anthem. Will you be playing in Ibiza this summer?

Yes we will, we have already been out there once for the opening of Pacha on June 2nd, which was awesome, played the closing slot and it was still rammed at 7.30am. We are back at Pacha on August 24th for the Yoshitoshi Party, can’t wait!

Q: Is there a video to the track?

Yes there is, we shot it in a studio in north london a couple of months ago. Our intial idea was to shoot the video in Buenos Aires, its a shame the record label didn’t think the same! :-)
Q: What was it like making the video? Any funny stories?

It was good fun, being our first video it was a case of going with the flow, and not knowing what to expect. The studio crew and director were a really good bunch of people and put us at ease straight away, we had a really good laugh all day. We filmed our parts first, then Abby then the Dancers last, we saw the dancers practicing their moves during the day, unfortunately we had to leave for the studio before their section was filmed..when we saw the finished version with them in bikini’s we wished we had stayed longer!

Q: Are you going to be making a follow up?

We are working on a couple of follow ups, we are going to go back into the studio with Danny Rampling to work on a follow up to ‘Strobelight’ and on ‘Something On Your Mind’ which we have a couple of ideas for, we are hoping the follow up with be a little bit different, still housey but with an more alternative vibe than the current track.

Q: Are there any other projects you are working on?

We are currently in the studio working on a couple of remixes, for Data and Virgin, we are also in the process of working on a collaborations album, working with djs/producers and musicians not necessarily involved in the dance arena and seeing what noise we can make together!

its still early days on this project but we are talking to people who are interested in working with us, watch this space…

Electric Gardens: the skinny

Electric Gardens: the skinny
Electric Gardens is a boutique festival which takes place at the impossibly beautiful Mount Ephraim, a family owned stately home steeped in over three hundred years of history. The house and beautifully landscaped gardens are set amongst eight hundred acres of orchard, fields and woodland. The sloping nature of the site offers a perfect natural amphitheatre to the main stage, which is further enhanced by the stunning natural backdrop.

www.mountephraimgardens.co.uk

Founded by promoter Marcus Wallis, Electric Gardens is a distinctly personal project. He says: ?The name first came to me when I was walking through the gardens at this fantastic stately home near Canterbury - Mount Ephraim - and we were thinking of putting on the festival. As a massive Pink Floyd fan I remembered an event that Floyd had performed at, called the ?Electric Garden? in the early 1970?s in Glasgow, and, having always liked the name, decided on it there and then. And with our event being set amongst the most beautiful landscaped gardens in the heart of England, and with the emphasis firmly on live forward-thinking as well as electronic music, the name ?Electric Gardens? suddenly seemed very apt.?

And, being a perfectly-formed boutique festival, did we mention that the food doesn?t take a back seat either? Pre- and post-dancing sustenance will be provided by local Kent-based company CBH (who?ve served the ladies and gents at British Grand Prix, Chelsea Flower Show, and the Epsom Derby no less) who are sourcing only local ingredients to provide freshly prepared dishes, including such delights as a hog roast with crackling and apple sauce, as well as their own versions of staple festival fare such as Thai Green Chicken Curry, Bangers & Mash, and stir fries.

And, finally, at Electric Gardens you can say goodbye to overpriced warm cans of lager and cheap spirits in dingy measures. The bars will be stocked with only premium spirits, top brand lager and award winning cask conditioned ale, all served to the optimum drinking temperatures and with the minimum of fuss (ie nice and cold and by friendly bar staff!)

Midnight Society Interview with Curtis Atchison and Erik Reyes

Midnight Society. It’s a name that represents the deep, dark and sexy tribal/progressive sounds made by Curtis Atchison and Erik Reyes, two DJ/producers who have been hard at work in the studio for the last 7 years. Curtis Atchison originally founded the name in 1996, with DJ/Producer Erik Reyes joining the realm in 1999. Together they have DJ’ed hundreds of party’s, spent a countless number of hours in the studio and have created a large number of original pieces of music together. Some DJ’s that have played their records include Danny Tenaglia, Saeed Younan, DJ Vibe, and Steve Lawler along with a countless number of DJ’s around the global pushing the Midnight Society productions. And for the last few months SoundGroove Record label has been creating a storm of beats over the house music nation. -

Interview by Jon Viera

JON VIERA - How did you start your DJ/Producer career?

(ERIK REYES) I met a promoter when I was bartending one night with one of my tapes playing. I got the gig and I’ve been working ever since.

(CURTIS ATCHISON) I started DJ’ing at a college radio station in Salem, Massachusetts back in 1991. I had my own mixshow featuring Hip-Hop, R&B and eventually House Music for 6 years. I didn’t start producing my own music till much later when I moved to New Jersey.

JV - Did you ever realize that your passion for music would take you to where you are now?

(ER) I’m still a work in progress. I still feel like I have a long way to go.

(CA) I never really thought that I could make a full career out of music and playing records for people. This all started out as just a fun hobby. I really love the music, and would be producing & mixing even if I wasn’t a musician.

JV - Could you share with us what influenced you guys?

(ER) My countless nights out staring at what the DJ was doing in the booth and watching the crowd go crazy.

(CA) My first influences came from my older brother who was a DJ for a few years before he gave it up and became a mechanic. My older siblings always surrounded me with music and it rubbed off on me. Other influences came when I got older and started going to clubs to see the DJ work the crowd.

JV - When and where was the first place you spun at?

(ER) Bar Nine in Hells Kitchen.

(CA) The Loft in Boston, Massachusetts.

JV ( The loft was an amazing place where alot of dj’s got their first time playing out at, including Armand Van Heldon)

JV - Do you remember the first 12″ you purchased?

(ER) Mickey Mouse Disco in kindergarten. I had to have it.

(CA) My first house music 12 was Stinkin Thinkin by the Happy Mondays and Samba by the House Of Gypsies. My very FIRST 12? It was an LP called At Home With Ernie & Bert. Or maybe it was the Earth Wind & Fire album that I snatched from my older sister when I was very little?

JV: Are there any dj’s or producers that influenced your sound to what it is today?

(ER) David Morales, Danny Tenaglia, Sander Kleinenberg, Roger Sanchez, and the list goes on.

(CA) Lots of influences! Tenaglia, Deep Dish, Paulo & Todd Duktevich, Quivver, and Markus Schulz are currently some of my favorites. Im also heavily into the tribal productions coming out of Spain & Portugal from producers like DJ Petzi, Simon & Shaker, Chus & Ceballos, RPO, D-Formation and Eric Entrena. I could list names forever.

JV - What is your favorite party thus far?
(ER) The ‘Ritmo’ Part from this years WMC in Miami.

(CA) Be Yourself @ Vinyl/ARC, NYC, or the original Sound Factory Saturdays with Junior Vasquez. The music, the vibe, the space & the people. Everything I would look for in a club.

JV - What DJ’s have you had a chance to tag team with?

(ER) Curtis Atchison and Victor Calderone

(CA) Tag teaming with Erik is always fun. I don’t get a chance to do it as often as I would like, but there’s plenty of DJs out there that I would love to play records with.

JV - Why?

(ER) Why not?

(CA) What he said

JV - If you could have a residency at any club world wide, which one would it be?

(ER) Crobar, Miami

(CA) Either Space in Downtown Miami or Stereo in Montreal.

JV - If you could make a record with 3 DJ’s or producers who would they be?

(ER) I would love to work with Victor Calderone, Deep Dish, and Frankie Knuckles.

(CA) Only three? Ill have to say Danny Tenaglia, Deep Dish and Markus Schulz.

JV - Top 3 records, ever? (Yes, just three)

(ER) 1 Nick Holder “Erotic Illusions” / 2 MK feat Alana “Burning” / 3 Urban Soul feat Roland Clark “Alright” Zanzibar Mix

(CA) Again, only three? 1 House Of Gypsies - Samba / 2. St. Etienne - Only Love Can Break Your Heart / 3 Barbara Tucker Beautiful People

JV - What gear do you like to use in the DJ booth?

(ER) Nowadays all I want is a dj booth that completely works. I love Technics and Pioneers for my hands, and Sennheisers on my head.

(CA) Currently feeling the new Pioneer CD Decks and always loved the Denon 2600 for a rack unit. Also liking what Ive been seeing with Ableton Live. Vestax has some great mixers, although Rane mixers are great in the clubs. A couple of CD decks plus a working pair of Technics turntables and were in business.

JV - The good old vinyl vs. CD topic, what’s your stand on it?

(ER) Play whatever you can get your hands on. Vinyl still sounds great and the creativity is endless with CD players.

(CA) I will always love vinyl, but with today’s technology its just not practical to be lugging crates of records to gigs anymore. CD technology has caught up and makes our jobs a lot easier. I like using a little bit of both when I play for even more creativity.

JV - All the traveling you guys do, do you have a favorite club?

(ER) I still don’t have a favorite. Each experience has been very special.

(CA) Same here but I do have a fondness for The Box in Mexico City and the Pedra do Couto in Portugal. We should travel more so we can answer this question better!!

JV - In your productions, what do you try to bang out on the first day?

(ER) I try to have the basic skeleton of the track done the first day.

(CA) The beats and the bassline are essential to me. I want to be able to get the basic groove down and tighten it up as best as possible.

JV - So how would you describe your sound?

(ER) Sexy Tribal

(CA) Dark, Dirty & Delicious. And old friend of mine referred to that as making music in 3D.

JV - If you could remix just one track, which one would it be?

(ER) It would be have to be Nick Holder’s “Erotic Illusions”. The track is under 5 minutes long and I would love to extend and update the track. It was perfect for it’s time and I still love it just as much as the first time I heard it.

(CA) Too many songs come to mind. I’m thinking a song like Joi Cardwells “Trouble” or DeLacys “That Look”.

JV - What platform do you make your tracks on?

(ER) Acid 5.0

(CA) Ive done projects on Acid Pro, Soundtrack, Logic and have put together basic grooves using Reason & Fruity Loops.

JV - So what does Midnight Society have in the works?

(ER) We are currently working on the next few releases on Soundgroove Records.

(CA) We have tons of releases coming up on our label SoundGroove, which include talented producers & remixers like X-Union, Craig Mitchell, Cytric, Marne Le Noir, DJ Petzi, Evolved, DJ Paulo & Todd Duktevich, Xenon, Keven Maroda, Rick Corbo, Bass Rokwell, Laconic, Saillant, as well as other individual projects on labels such at Tweekd & Stealth. Also, were planning another SoundGroove Sessions Party on May 2nd at SBNY in New York City. Lots of things to expect from us all throughout 2006.

JV - Any words of advice to the up coming DJ or Producer?

(ER) Have respect for your peers. Be very open-minded. Don’t stop moving. If the manager, promoter, or whatever of one club doesn’t get you the next one will.

(CA) There are a lot of negative & closed-minded people out there who are more interested in telling you what to do instead of encouraging and embracing the diverse spectrum that is House Music. Try to respect the views of others and occasionally cater to the masses, but above all stay true to yourself and ALWAYS play and produce what you like. The fame and fortune you seek will eventually find you.

Midnight Society. I told you in the begining of this interview that is was from the hard work and dedication that drove this duo to make the prefect beat. And looking at the up coming tracks they are working on, these guys just don’t sleep. Not only have they made some of the biggest house tracks around, but they keep a humble attitude towards themseleves. The guys let me know that they have to go back to the studio, to keep pushing on their sound, and I thank them for their time.

Beijing curbs disco to cramp “crazy” drug takers

Beijing has banned disco and other dance music in private rooms of nightclubs and karaoke bars to curb the flood of illegal drugs into the capital?s entertainment venues, Chinese newspapers reported Friday

?Because many drug takers regularly dance and go crazy to upbeat ?disco? music in private rooms, police have specially requested karaoke machines not have this music,? the Beijing Times newspaper said.

Music chain fined after pirating music

In a rare case of music retailer-turned-Internet pirate, the Virgin store chain in France said Tuesday that it had been found guilty of downloading and reselling a Madonna hit without permission.

The store?s online portal, virginmega.fr, was ordered by the Paris Tribunal de Commerce to pay ?600,000, or $754,000, in damages for downloading the Madonna song ?Hung Up? from a France T?l?com Web site that had exclusive rights to distribute the song for one week.

?This is an amazing case of simple piracy by a respected company,? Herv? Payan, senior vice president for content partnership and service at France T?l?com, said Tuesday. ?Virgin behaved in a surreal manner by downloading the song, cracking protection measures and then selling it from their own Web site.?

For its part, Virgin said that it had the interests of digital music consumers at heart when it broke the exclusive arrangement.

High Tech Soul - The Creation Of Techno Music

High Tech Soul is the first film to tackle the deep roots of techno and the culture of Detroit, its home. Seeking to answer the hows and whys of techno music and its evolution, the film also demonstrates the weird & wonderful effects it has had on its pioneers. Featuring in-depth interviews with many of the world?s most famous exponents of the artform, High Tech Soul is a treat for anyone who has ever been inspired by the genre or got down and shaken their stuff to it?s original sound.

From the riots of 1967 to the underground party scene of the late 80’s, High Tech Soul invites its audience to take a walk around the globe and back to one of the most challenging cities in the world. Artists explain why Techno with its driving beats, abrasive tones, and resonating bass lines could not have come from anywhere else other than Detroit. Much like the city itself, techno is deprived and emotional yet continues to set trends around the world, touching lives no one could have ever imagined.

Tower to Open Digital Music Store

Music retailer Tower Records will unveil its digital music download service on Tuesday, complete with 1.2 million tracks priced at 99 cents per song. Powered by Puretracks, tracks would be provided in Windows Media Format, Reuters reports.

As with the company?s brick-and-mortar stores, Tower?s digital store will provide a range of music across many genres not commonly found in other retail chains. Additionally, the company plans to offer the files encoded at a higher bitrate to increase sound quality.

Any player that can support protected Windows Media files would be able to use the service, which means users of the iPod cannot playback Tower?s tracks on their players. Songs would be downloaded from the Tower Web site, and would be burnable to CD.

Putting the mobile music pieces in place

Once the scourge of the music industry, digital downloads are now officially ?the way forward? for the ?Big Four? record labels - EMI, SonyBMG, Universal and Warner Music, which together control over 70% of the world?s recorded music - now that they have numbers to justify it, anyway.

The monetization issue is tricky not least because at the end of the day music is just one content purchase option among many, says Marcel Fenez, Asia-Pacific leader of Entertainment & Media Practices at PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

?Music is competing for consumer entertainment dollars from other sectors, and they are all growing much faster,? he says.

For example, video games will grow 13% CAGR in the next few years, driven by online and wireless sales, while pay TV content revenues will grow 10%. Sports revenues will grow 8%, and film 6%.

Creamfields Given Go Ahead

Creamfields has been given the go-ahead to be held at its new home in Daresbury, Halton, Cheshire on Saturday August 26th. Halton Borough Council granted a licence for the world famous music event at its Regulatory Committee meeting on Tuesday.

Cream Chief Executive James Barton said: ?We are naturally delighted that our licence application has been successful. ?We were always confident in the strength of the application and we are now looking forward to putting on what will be a superb show. ?In addition, our team have unrivalled expertise and many years of experience in staging major outdoor events such as this and in ensuring the safety and well-being of all those attending, as well as those residents living nearby.?

Up to 45,000 people are expected to attend the event to watch such big-name acts as The Prodigy, Goldfrapp, Gnarls Barkley and The Zutons.

Creamfields was forced to move from its original home at the old Liverpool Airport site in Speke due to the amount of development work being carried out. An extensive search for a suitable venue resulted in the Daresbury estate being the favoured option in terms of scale, access and availability. Creamfields has been welcomed by a cross section of the community with a recent independent survey of over 1,000 residents in Halton and Warrington showing that more than 90% were in favour of the event coming to Daresbury. There has also been a positive response from the local business community and from tourism leaders. Halton and Warrington are likely to share in an economic windfall of more than ?3 million.

A study carried out at Creamfields in 2004 by The Mersey Partnership estimated that each person attending the event spent more than ?90. Businesses expected to benefit include bus, taxi and rail companies, plus pubs, restaurants, hotels, guest houses and bed and breakfast accommodation.
