Steaming into its eleventh release the Choice series continues with a bang with three times Grammy-nominated Kenny Dope? Being asked to complete a Choice mix is becoming something of a benchmark against which success and status is measured. Kenny does not disappoint and steps up to offer us a heady, disco ensemble fuelled with rare Chicago classics and hard to find grooves. One for the heads, Kenny Dope?s release is full of warm nostalgia and is a nod to Kenny?s rich musical past which covers everything from house, hip hop, soul, Jazz, broken beats and more.
The Choice series itself explores dance music?s most famous DJs and what they consider to be their all time classic tracks. It?s a chance for them to communicate their own music history and feature tracks that have inspired them over the years to form the foundations of who they are today. The albums also feature the compiler?s own exclusive re-edits that will only ever feature on these album?s and nowhere else.
Kenny Dope grew up in Brooklyn?s Sunset Park and by the early eighties he was absorbing the beats that were being played at the local street parties, by the early 90?s he was working under the legendary MAW alias with new buddy Louie Vega. 1995 saw Kenny release the sensational ?The Bomb! (These Sounds Fall into my Mind?). And for the last decade Kenny Dope has had his hands full releasing literally thousands of tracks, remixing hundreds of singles, and globe trotting to DJ all over the world. In his production work, Kenny consistently shows his distinctive ability for programming superior beats while blending a myriad of music styles to deliver the ultimate mix. With his long-established reputation as a DJ extraordinaire, Kenny showcases a melting pot of house, jazz, funk and soul. It?s these qualities that made him an obvious contender for Azuli?s prestigious Choice series.
You can practically feel the satin flares and see the dance moves on this mix, with staple tunes from Seminal artists such as James Brown, Earth Wind & Fire, Kool & the Gang and not forgetting exceptional groove jems such as Hokis Pokis? ?Nowhere?.
Kenny joins a host of legendary artists such as Jeff Mills, Louie Vega, Derrick Carter, Francois Kervorkian, Tony Humphries, Danny Tenaglia, X-Press 2 and Frankie Knuckles hosting previous releases, it?s just a matter of time before your own personal hero gets this unique opportunity to really communicate their own musical history. That?s if they haven?t stepped up already that is.
Choice is a compilation series from Azuli that has gained respect worldwide and Choice captures those records that have featured in the Djs box over the past twenty years.
The saying goes ?To grasp the future you need to understand the past??And this is one very special album that does just that?

Mike Skinner returns with his first single since The Streets’ number one album ‘A Grand Don’t Come For Free’, with a sure sign that his life hasn’t got much easier. ‘When You Wasn’t Famous’ is as brash, immediate and witty as anything he has previously put his name to and head and shoulders above anything else of its ilk, once more proving that nobody spins a yarn quite like Skinner.
An autobiographical trip into the world of the now notorious rapper, ‘When You Wasn’t Famous’ is the flipside of fame’s shiny coin, the true story of his pursuit of a celebrity girl that put him right back to square one of the dating game. Delivered over a pristine Baile funk backdrop that proves his production nous continues to develop at a faster pace than that doomed relationship, the lyrics reveal the murky truths behind the Heat-style white-toothed smiles; “considering the amount of prang you’d done you looked amazing on CD:UK”.
The Streets’ third album ‘The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living’ is set for release on April 10th and sees The Streets switching up his rapping, twisting out the production and laying open some heartfelt lyrics accross its eleven tracks. Getting bandy has clearly been high on his list of hobbies in the last two years, as “I realise with you the truth can be a whole lot worse than the flak, my whole life I never thought i’d see a pop star smoke some crack”.
No-one can talk about real life on record in the same compelling wry and observant way as Mike Skinner, and ‘When You Wasn’t Famous’ provides the perfect introduction to what is set to be one of the most talked about albums of 2006.
‘When You Wasn’t Famous’ is released on Warner Brothers Records on 27th March. A full tour will be announced shortly.
The EXCLUSIVE LIVE download of ‘When You Wasn’t Famous’, recorded in Bath, will be available to download from the official site - www.the-streets.co.uk from Monday 27th March.
Downloads cost 99p / ?1.50 SMS.
